Evaluation, information, application - Witten/Herdecke students design comprehensive internship portal

Relaunch of www.meinpraktikum.de / interns evaluate job experience / tips on how to apply, legal information

More personal reports, more internships, more service - as per January 2012, meinpraktikum.de is the most comprehensive German internship portal. Founded a year ago by UW/H students, the portal today offers Germany's biggest database with over 6.000 personal accounts and also an elaborate search method for internships. In addition, users find valuable tips on how to apply and on legal aspects of internships.
Applicants for internships get comprehensive and detailed insights into business firms. It is important for prospective interns to know whether they will be an accepted and responsible member of the team, or just sent to the coffee machine and copier all day long. Evaluations of internships at meinpraktikum.de are free of charge, anonymous, and provide valuable information for others seeking placements. Reports are complemented by detailed profiles of partner businesses; these present themselves with photos, videos and job offers but have no chance to influence the assessments.
Co-founder Stefan Peukert underlines that the focus is clearly on interns' interests and rights. In cooperation with Prof. Dr. Friedrich Schade (BiTS Iserlohn) the team gives honest advice in all legal matters related to internships, even on delicate aspects such as being untruthful in interviews.
Apart from specific legal advice, meinpraktikum.de offers useful general information on how to apply. Human resources executives from renowned corporations like otto group, Google and Porsche give insider tips.
After just one year, the student-initiated evaluation platform has become Germany's most successful internship portal. Feedback from more than 40 visited universities all over Germany has enabled the founder team to tailor the portal to the needs and wishes of prospective interns. Meinpraktikum.de now has a team of 10 (with interns of their own), who plan to put a number of new ideas into practice in 2012, with international internships as one possible area of future activities.

Lesson planning online

Alumni of Witten/Herdecke University design an online platform that helps teachers in preparing lessons / www.meinUnterricht.de

Stefan Appelhans, David Klett and Benjamin Wüstenhagen, three UW/H alumni, designed the internet portal
K.lab, so the name of their start-up business, develops tools and cloud applications to facilitate all steps in the preparation of school lessons: finding high quality material, planning a lesson, implementing the plan in the classroom. They will present their idea at the didacta fair in Hanover from February 14 to 18.
Stefan Appelhans contradicts a widely held belief: "My cousin is a teacher, and I know this is anything but a part time job. Good teachers must update the teaching material they use on a regular basis." The founders of meinUnterricht.de cooperate with specialized publishers and journals and provide digital material for lesson preparation on this platform designed for teachers. Subscription gives access to all contents.
Search for teaching materials should be fast and accurate, i.e. should produce exactly what you are looking for. The brains behind meinUnterricht.de have found ways to save time and get direct access to all documents. The cloud service they offer permits arrangement of all materials on a virtual desk, which saves search time and also actual space. Teachers do not have to copy pages from a host of different textbooks, and briefcases become much lighter, since the platform is accessible from everywhere and from any PC.
Team work makes life easier; meinUnterricht.de will permit teachers to exchange individual lesson preparations and collaborate in the design of teaching concepts. Benjamin Wünstenhagen: "meinUnterricht.de is a service specifically for teachers and helps them to achieve better results in day-to-day school life."
K.lab will present the platform meinUnterricht.de at the didacta educational fair in Hanover (Hall 16, A10/1) from February 14 to 18, 2012.

Bertram Foundation supports projects on collective intelligence for the benefit of Morbus Crohn patients and on the Chinese health care system

Two Witten/Herdecke University students receive travel allowance.

This year's first prize of the Bertram Foundation for Economics endowed with Euro 3.000 goes to Jermain Christopher Kaminski. He intends to use the funds for a website for Morbus Crohn patients as the subject of his final thesis which he will finish in the United States: "I explored the topic of collective intelligence over the past years, in part at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and together with colleagues came across this specific application. The project is about a social network for patients suffering from the autoimmune disease Morbus Crohn, which to date has not been exhaustively researched for causes and optimum therapies."
A full version of the website will go online along the East and West coast in March 2012. Kaminski: "There is almost no exchange and networking among the approx. 6 million patients in the US and Europe, despite a high internet affinity on the part of the many young patients." Researchers from MIT, the Cologne University, the Savannah College of Art & Design, and physicians from the Cincinatti Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School collaborate to create the website in a combination of methods derived from online dating, Wikipedia and Facebook. "Patients will use the network to exchange views on therapeutic successes and innovative interventions, or get organized locally. Our focus is not so much on medical details as on soft factors such as personal interests and the family situation. Studies on homophily and emergence support this approach, since a concentration on collective solutions and not on individual problems tends to raise collective creativity. Our core objective is to improve patients' quality of life."
The second prize, endowed with Euro 2.000, goes to David Weis. Having acquired a Bachelor degree with studies on politics and economics in East Asia, Weis started simultaneous studies in economics and medicine at Witten/Herdecke University in 2008. He plans to write his Master thesis on the Chinese health insurance system on site: "Currently about 90 % of the Chinese population are covered by health insurance. This is a success in itself, but many problems remain, such as access and insufficient coverage. I intend to find out which additional health reforms are required to assure a good future health insurance system for the most populous nation of the world."
In 1998 Gisela and Helmut Bertram established a fund in support of Witten/Herdecke University. Part of the proceeds are used as travel allowance for economics students who write their final thesis abroad. Other UW/H students may also apply to the foundation for grants, scholarships and travel allowance. The foundation supports the Witten/Herdecke concept, i.e. a combination of high-quality education, practice orientation, and personal development via obligatory general studies in humanities and arts.

Expert conference on dementia care in hospitals

Nursing scientists discuss experiences and new concepts of patient care on February 29, 2012.

Special aspects of medical care for dementia patients in acute care hospitals are the topic of an expert conference of nursing scientists on February 2, 2012 (UW/H, Richtersaal, Stockumer Str. 10; 11:00 a.m. – 04:00 p.m.).

Acute care of dementia patients involves a number of specific problems.
Dementia patients hospitalized for a heart attack or other acute problems are faced with unknown surroundings and a frequently changing team of carers. Continuously changing demands made of patients also cause distress. Some patients react with persistent screams, others wander along corridors in disorientation. Nurses often have neither the training nor the time to cope with such behaviour, and ask a patient’s family to help out. Demographic trends are well known, and the expectation of many more hospitalized dementia patients in the future causes acute care hospitals to develop specific concepts for this patient group.

The expert conference will discuss existing care concepts, the implementation and evaluation of such concepts, as well as inhibiting and facilitating factors. A second focus, apart from acute care in hospitals, will be on aspects of nursing care provided by relatives.

The agenda:
11:10 – 11:40 a.m. : Dr. Klaus Wingenfeld (hospital care for dementia patients – a nursing science perspective)
11:40 – 12:20 a.m.: Master students Nursing Science (situative concepts employed by acute care hospital staff for dementia patients)
12:20 - 12:40 a.m.: Sebastian Kraus (acute care concepts for hospitalized dementia patients)
01:30 - 02:00 p.m.: Niklas Hug (findings from a flagship project in an acute care hospital)
02:00 – 02:30 p.m.: Petra Runge-Werner/senior nursing expert, University Clinic Essen (introduction of the concept of ‘dementia patients in hospital’)
02:30 – 02:50 p.m.: Christiane Pinkert (inhibiting and facilitating factors in the implementation of care concepts for hospitalized dementia patients)
03:05 – 03.25 p.m.: Prof. Dr. Wilfried Schnepp (dementia patients and family in the hospital – from the family carers’ perspective)
03:25 – 03:45 p.m.: Anneke de Jong (integration of innovative ideas in nursing practice)
03:45 – 04:00 p.m. summary and outlook

Admission: € 25 (cash)

Registration (deadline: February 2, 2012): Nadja Mchiri, phone: 02302/926-358, fax: 02302/926-318,

The future banking system

Alexander Schwedeler, Director of Triodos Bank Germany, calls for a new banking system. UW/H, January 24, 2012.

Alexander Schwedeler, Director of the German branch of Triodos Bank – by their own account Europe’s number one in sustainable banking - will give a lecture on the implications of the global crisis in the financial and banking system. Location: Witten/Herdecke University, great hall. Time: Tuesday, January 24, 2012; 06:30 p.m.

Alexander Schwedeler will describe the current state of the banking and financial system. National economies are faced with insolvency. Protests erupt all over the world against banks in the centre of the crisis. The man in the street watches with impotent rage how financial wizards gamble his money away. Financial markets have become almost too complicated even for experts. Alexander Schwedeler recalls the traditional role of banks and their original responsible function in and for society. He believes that not enough has changed since the outbreak of the financial crisis; using the Triodos Bank as an example, he makes suggestions how to restructure the banking system.

The lecture is part of the student-organized oikos Sustainable Innovator Speaker Series (SISS) in the winter term 2011/12.
