"Patient care with human dignity calls not only for personal interest in fellow humans and individual assistance, but also for a perception of man’s spiritual nature. The guiding objective must be to promote and encourage patients’ unrealized spiritual potential, which defies physical detection but may be perceived in their hopes and aspirations as a distant possibility."

Gerhard Kienle (1923 - 1983)
Initiator and founding member of Witten/Herdecke University, physician, scientist

The concept of the Integrated Curriculum in Antroposophic Medicine (ICURAM) is based on Rudolf Steiner’s recommendations for design and further development of medical university curricula, with a focus on studies of nature, man, and illness from a comprehensive perspective. Suggestions for training in perception, reflexion, feeling and intention as part of a physician’s activities play an important role, in addition to therapeutic skills and medical ethos.

ICURAM comprises three phases of about 2 years each. Throughout all phases students are involved in various art, exercise and manual therapies.

The curriculum addresses the following core areas:

1. Semesters 1 - 4

  • health - disease - healing
  • basic aspects of a phenomenological science of man
  • development of a comprehensive understanding and concept of nature
  • an understanding of the relationship between humans and areas of nature

2. Semesters 4 - 7

  • health - disease - healing
  • knowledge and skills involved in various clinical disciplines
  • basic laws govering a life cycle
  • medicinal science (with medication and without)
