Section of Experimental Research

One of the main research focuses within the Section of Experimental Research is the development of cellular replacement strategies following traumatic brain injury. Severe traumatic brain injury is associated with a massive loss of brain cells. Given the limited capacity of the central nervous system for self-repair, transplantation of stem cells may provide a cure for the damaged nervous system. In order to optimize cellular replacement strategies a variety of different stem cell lines are characterised and transplanted into clinical relevant trauma injury models. Stem cell fate is pursued by imaging techniques. Protective effects of stem cells are assessed through behavioural tests. Improvement of neuronal motor and cognitive function is examined in particular.
