For information on current exchange programs please contact the International Office (campus, room E04) or the international coordinator at your faculty.

ERASMUS PROGRAM ACADEMIC YEAR 2012/13

June 1, 2012 – September 30, 2013

The EU ERASMUS program offers the chance to study at a European university for 3 to 12 months. Witten/Herdecke University has established contacts with European universities for this purpose.

Financial support for covering additional costs involved in a study period abroad is moderate. In general, participants may expect between 150 and 200 Euro per month.

Benefits: exemption from tuition fees at the partner university, and in general excellent advice and support on site. Recognition of credits acquired is not automatic but works as a rule, thanks to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). Nevertheless, we recommend that you clarify all matters concerning recognition of credits with your student dean, clinic coordinator or international coordinator at faculty level prior to your time abroad.

Please note:
The application period for the ERASMUS program in the academic year 2012/13 is November 27, 2011 to January 20, 2012.

If the number of applications for a partner university exceeds the number of available places, the international coordinator at faculty level decides whom to nominate (not on a first come first served basis).

General information

  • Study period abroad of between 3 months (minimum) and 12 months (maximum)
  • EU mobility grant (between 150 and 200 € per month)
  • Exemption from tuition fees at the partner university
  • Recognition of certificates/credits acquired abroad

Applicants

All regularly enrolled UW/H students may apply for the ERASMUS program who are nationals of an EU country or another country participating in ERASMUS or who have a permanent residence permit.

Prior to application

  1. Select your host university.
  2. Gather detailed information on the host university: academic year, semester dates; check their homepage and the courses they offer.
  3. Discuss your plans with your faculty or academic adviser.
  4. Read your fellow students’ reports. For current reports on exchange periods abroad contact the International Office or see the Intranet database  Auslanddatenbank (web access password), or Internet: iagora.com and erasmus-berichte.de
  5. Language preparation (language courses at UW/H, private language courses, TANDEM partnerships and ERASMUS Intensive Language Courses/EILC).

Application for the programm

The following documents have to be submitted to the International Office prior to the indicated deadline "forms and downloads):

  • Letter describing your motivation
  • CV in tabular form
  • Transcript of Records (certificates/credits acquired, including grades)
Bilateral Student Exchange Application Form 2012/13
  • Learning Agreement
    EU Evaluation Form 2012/13

The Learning Agreement must be coordinated with your faculty after you have carefully checked the courses offered at the host university. Set up a list of courses you plan to take and complete the Learning Agreement accordingly. The UW/H ERASMUS coordinator will send the Learning Agreement to the host university for their approval (and signature). The guest student will be informed of any necessary changes.

ECTS (European Credit Transfer System)

As a rule, 60 credits correspond to the workload of one year, or 30 credits to one semester. A certain number of credits is therefore assigned to each teaching event as a measure of the workload at the host university, and thus as the basis for recognition at the home university.

At the end of the exchange period you will receive a Transcript of Records from the host university listing your certificates/performance. This transcript must be presented to the international coordinator at the home university for recognition. Medical students present the transcript to their clinic coordinator for registration. The International Office files a copy of all Transcripts of Records.

Accommodation

Many host universities offer rooms in a student dormitory for exchange students. For details see the information or welcome package provided by the host university or their websites. It is advisable to meet the deadlines for application for a dormitory room, and in general to arrange for accommodation at an early date.

Health insurance

Prior to an exchange period abroad, find out whether and to which extent your health insurance is valid abroad. Nationals of EU membership countries as a rule are covered by a social security agreement between member states. Ask your health insurer for the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

Please note
Even if there is a social security agreement between your home country and your host country, insurance cover may differ considerably. Contact your health insurer for details and if necessary take out additional international health insurance/third-party insurance.

Mobility grant

The mobility grant will as a rule be paid out in two instalments: one instalment at the beginning of your stay abroad, and another at the end of the academic year in September/October.

Return

Upon return, the following documents must be submitted to the UW/H International Office:

  • Letter of confirmation with the exact data (start and end) of your stay at the host university
  • copy of the Transcript of Records (to be issued by the host university; please inquire on site!)
  • personal report of experiences (print-out, and to be made available in the Intranet)
  • EU evaluation form (see forms and downloads)

Please note
The mobility grant will only be paid out in full if you present all documents at the International Office immediately upon your return. We reserve the right to reclaim mobility grant funds already paid out.
