Graduation in Dental Medicine

Students of the examination class of 2011 successfully concluded their studies of dental medicine in Witten.

“Unbelievable how time flies,” says Anna Halves looking back on five years as a student at the Department of Dentistry, Faculty of Health, Witten/Herdecke University. Graduates received their certificates on December 16, 2011 and celebrated the acquired degrees.

At UW/H, the size of classes in dental medicine is comparable to school classes. This ensures productive learning and an excellent student-teacher ratio with personal supervision. Another characteristic of dentistry studies in Witten are early and continuously increasing patient contacts as well as practical experience and practice-oriented work right from the start. At the preclinical stage, students are involved in emergency duty; at the clinical stage, they provide assistance in dental treatment of fellow students; first they are trained with phantom heads in preparation for treatment of real patients. In the integrated course during the clinical stage, students are assigned their “own” patients for preliminal examination; they set up a treatment plan and follow it up in teams of two under continuous expert supervision. Students must complete a defined number of program achievements/certificates to be finally licenced to practice dentistry; they enjoy much freedom in the organization and planning of their studies. One day per week, however, is not for subject-related studies; then students of all disciplines meet for fundamental studies, i.e. general studies of humanities and arts, communication or philosophy.

“In general we feel the past five years were excellent preparation for the job,” so Anna Halves in praise of the degree course in dentistry completed at Witten/Herdecke University.
