AWARDS AND TOP RANKINGS FOR WITTEN/HERDECKE UNIVERSITY
2011 / "Hochschulperle" for Luther’s Launderette
Homelessness and poverty are serious health risks. In Luther’s Launderette in the south east of the Ruhr area UW/H students of medicine and dentistry give active support to people who live at or below poverty level. They provide health care even for those without health insurance. The Stifterverband honoured their commitment with the Hochschulperle award in August 2011.
2011 / Universum Ranking for Economics: Witten students highly satisfied
According to the latest nation-wide Universum survey, economics students at Witten/Herdecke University are again among those most satisfied with their education; the survey covers private and state universities alike. Students award an average of 4.8 on a scale of 5 for general satisfaction. Individual criteria are, among others, contacts to the business world (4.7), student-teacher ratio (4.9), and practice orientation in teaching (4.7). UW/H economics students enjoy excellent study conditions and rate their university among the top group in nearly all categories.
2011 / trendence barometer: UW/H top in eight out of eleven categories
Students of economics again give high marks to Witten/Herdecke University in the trendence Graduate Barometer 2011: top ratings for UW/H in eight out of eleven categories and one good rating, with only two lesser marks for the categories library and IT. Students approaching graduation give highest marks for supervision, career service, cooperation with the business world, practice orientation in education, teacher quality, university services and student initiatives.
2011 / CHE University Ranking acknowledges excellent study conditions in economics at Witten/Herdecke University
Much praise for international orientation of Master progrmme in General Management
The CHE University Ranking published in the new ZEIT study guide 2011/12 again awards top marks to Witten/Herdecke University in economics. Economics students are most satisfied with study conditions in general and the feasibility of finishing their programme within the allotted time. The survey addresses the latter criterion in inquiring whether seminars and lectures actually convey the knowledge that is later tested in examinations.
2011 / TWO LANDMARKS IN THE LAND OF IDEAS
The Master course in Family Business Management and the “glovico” project of UW/H doctoral candidate Tobias Lorenz were selected in this year’s competition “365 landmarks in the land of ideas”.
This is the fourth time (after 2006, 2008 and 2009) for Witten/Herdecke University to be honored in this context. In 2006 the project “Germany – Land of Ideas” started a competition in cooperation with Deutsche Bank in search for outstanding and original initiatives. Under the auspices of the Federal Presidency the competition highlights ideas with much innovative protential to shape the future of Germany in proactive ways.
Our projects were selected from a total of about 2.600 entries and are two among 365 award winners in 2011.
2010 / FACULTY OF MANAGEMENT AND ECONOMICS NUMBER TWO IN UNIVERSUM RANKING
An independent nation-wide survey by the international consultancy Universum Communications shows that students at the UW/H Faculty of Management and Economics are even more satisfied with their education than last year. Only Handelshochschule Leipzig registered more student satisfaction.
A total of 20.410 students were questioned at 106 German institutions of higher education. Currently UW/H economics students assign an average mark of 4.76 on a scale of 1 to 5 for general satisfaction. They give highest marks for quality of instruction, contacts to the business world, range of available courses, and for their professors.
2009/2010 / CHE University ranking
Top marks in the CHE university ranking 2009/2010 went to UW/H programs in economics, medicine and dental medicine. UW/H programs in medicine and dental medicine are in the top group of all universities in the categories of “overall study situation” and “student/ teacher ratio”. The Faculty of Management and Economics already had outstanding results in the year before, reaching the top group of all universities in the German language area in four out of five categories, second only to Universität Mannheim among the best faculties of economics.
02/2010 / DGN AWARDED ROBERT WARTENBERG PRIZE
The German Neurological Society awarded the Robert Wartenberg Prize to neurologist PD Dr. Carl-Albrecht Haensch for studies of the autonomic nervous system. Haensch delivered the Robert Wartenberg Lecture at the annual meeting of leading clinic neurologists in Kassel. Haensch is a senior physician of neurology at the HELIOS Medical Centre Wuppertal (UW/H teaching hospital) and director of the Wuppertal autonomous laboratory.
2010 / Louis-Stromeyer-Medaille der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Unfallchirurgie
Für seine Arbeit über Seilosteosynthesen wurde dem ehemaligen Lehrstuhlinhaber für Chirurgie der Universität Witten/Herdecke, Prof. Dr. Reiner Labitzke, von der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Unfallchirurgie der Literaturpreis mit der Louis-Stromeyer-Medaille verliehen.
4/2009 / HONORABLE MENTION AWARD, UNITED NATIONS, NEW YORK
From 2007 onwards Witten/Herdecke University has sent a student team to the National Model United Nations in New York every year. NMUN is the largest simulation of the United Nations worldwide and regularly attracts over 4000 participants from all over the globe. The Witten MUN group with 14 members won an “Honorable Mention Award” in 2009. Their trip was sponsored by the foundation Robert Bosch, the German Academic Exchange Service, and Wittener Universitätsgesellschaft.
2009 / UN PROJECT OIKOS WINTER SCHOOL
The “oikos Winter School”, a Witten student project for sustainable management, was appointed an official project of the UN decade “education for sustainable development” in 2009. A student team hosted the meeting for the third time in a row as a regular event of the international student organization “oikos”.
2009 / VDI SPONSORSHIP AWARD 2009 FOR WITTEN STUDENT
Economics student Mirjam Ruebbelke received the VDI (Association of German Engineers) sponsorship award 2009 for her Bachelor thesis on “Commerce as a catalyst for sustainable consumption? Integration of environmental and social aspects into food retailer strategies”.
2009 / GRÜNDERWERKSTATT – “LANDMARK IN THE LAND OF IDEAS”
Witten/Herdecke University stimulates entrepreneurial spirit. Freshmen in economics learn how to think and act as entrepreneurs right from the start, with practical experience as a sound basis for academic studies. The project is unique in Germany and was appointed a landmark in the land of ideas 2009. This is the third award for UW/H in the nationwide competition.
2009 / UW/H WITH HIGHEST SUSTAINABILITY FACTOR AMONG UNIVERSITIES
UW/H shares with FH Eberswalde the title of Germany’s university with the highest sustainability factor. The online portal Utopia awarded top rank to these two universities. Witten/Herdecke was among the top three in all five categories analysed: green campus, sustainable catering, energy saving and green resources, waste recovery, and teaching focus on green topics.
2009 / SPD-Fortschrittspreis an Wittener Wissenschaflerin
Am 3. Dezember 2009 wurde zum ersten Mal der SPD-Fortschrittspreis verliehen. Er ging unter anderem an die Wissenschaftlerinnen Maren Weber von der Universität Witten/Herdecke. SPD-Generalsekretärin Andrea Nahles übergab die Preise in der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften.

2008/2009 / CHE UNIVERSITY RANKING
The business administration course at UW/H is among the best in the German language area. Top results in almost all categories consolidate the faculty’s leading position established in previous years.
2008 / GRÜNDERWERKSTATT WINS COMPETION “EINFACH GRÜNDEN”
Benjamin Witte and Jonathan Rahn received special student awards for co-designing and implementing the GründerWerkstatt (start-up factory) at UW/H. GründerWerkstatt equips economics students with the requisite knowhow and practical competences to become successful entrepreneurs in their own right.
2008 / LANDMARK IN THE LAND OF IDEAS
In 2008 a student project was selected as a landmark in the “land of ideas” competition. Economics student Matti Spiecker is a co-initiator of the World:Class foundation. The foundation supports German high school students who spend one month in a development country or an emerging nation, like Thailand or China, and work shoulder to shoulder with local adolescents in reforestation and other projects. The German students are in regular video contact with classmates at home. The idea is to sensitize high school students for international relations and regional differences in an increasingly globalized world.

2008 / L’OREAL BRANDSTORM
Witten/Herdecke students Julian Kricheldorff, Stefan Winkler and Benjamin Wüstenhagen won a “special prize for innovative product design” in the national final of the L’Oréal Brandstorm competion with their idea of “se bronzer intrinsèque”. In the past Witten students won the national competition twice.
2008 / STUDIVZ RANKING
The Faculty of Medicine came out on top in the internet portal StudiVZ ranking, with the Faculty of Management and Economics as number three. The ranking resulted from a survey among almost 15.000 students and constitutes the first poll on the quality of German universities among students exclusively.

Witten/Herdecke University assumes position two in economics, an even better outcome compared to the year before.

2007/2008 / CHE UNIVERSITY RANKING
UW/H is now among the top 10 universities in economics. Germany’s oldest private university gets outstanding marks in the categories research funding, study situation, and student/teacher ratio. In medicine, the evaluation was very positive for overall study situation, student/teacher ratio, and hospital beds in affiliated clinics.

11/2007 / TCHIBO THINK TANK
Witten economics students Philip John, Matthias Naumann and Philipp Mühlbauer reached the second place among ca. 250 entries with an innovative business concept. During a 3-day workshop at the company headquarter in Hamburg they refined a novel marketing concept for glasses in cooperation with Tchibo product managers.
10/2007 / WERBEVISIONEN
Economics student Philipp Mühlbauer is the winner of the “Werbevisionen” competition, a joint project of StudiVZ (the largest German online platform for students) and the online editors of “Handelsblatt”, “Wirtschaftswoche” and “DIE ZEIT”. Selected from ca. 100 entries, his advertising vision uses latest technology like RFID (radio-frequency identification) and OLED (organic light emitting diodes) to ensure more target orientation in advertising.
2/2007 / DARDEN EUROPEAN CASE COMPETITION
A Witten economics student team won the final in the Darden School competition in 2007. The assignment was to work out a takeover bid for a firm and negotiate a successful deal. “Overall, this was an outstanding presentation – one of the best that I saw. Great job!” says organizer Prof. Ken Eades from the internationally renowned Darden School of Business.
2007 / FOCUS RANKING
UW/H reached fourth place in the first ranking for Business Administration in 2007, with specific praise for numerous interdisciplinary research projects. FOCUS interviewed researchers and personnel managers via mail and phone to assess the reputation of selected disciplines in student education and research.

2006 / A. T. KEARNEY COMPETITION
Four UW/H economics students won the competion of the renowned consulting firm A.T. Kearney in Düsseldorf. Their convincing presentation of a case study outclassed 150 teams from US and Europe.
2006 / LANDMARK IN THE LAND OF IDEAS
In the very first year of the competition “Germany – Land of Ideas” Witten/Herdecke University was selected as one of the first 365 landmarks. The competition under the auspices of the Federal Presidency serves to convey the image of Germany as an innovative, productive and future oriented nation on the national as well as international level.
