Mission statement
Witten/Herdecke University adheres to its educational concept and the implementation of its professed social objectives in pursuance of the following ideals:
Encourage freedom
Freedom from state regulations is seen as a chance for responsible organization of curricula, research and university management. UW/H provides a suitable context for all its members to develop special competences and pursue personal ideals for the benefit of society and environment, under conditions of autonomy and equality. We promote an understanding of other cultures and encourage other universities to expand and redefine freedom for students and researchers alike, with visible consequences for society as a whole.
Strive for truth
The quest for truth goes beyond feasibility. Witten/Herdecke University stands for a pluralistic approach and encourages personal experience, methodical changes in perspective, and open dialogue between disciplines as preconditions for sound judgement. It thus integrates problem-oriented approaches, assessments and findings, the possible consequences of which for society and environment are carefully evaluated. Witten/Herdecke University sees itself as an institution of life-long learning.
Assume social responsibility
Freedom is contingent upon responsibility. Members of Witten/Herdecke University assume personal responsibility for what they do and also for a sustained development of their university as a role model for university reforms in Germany. The priviledge of education in freedom implies social responsibility and an obligation to demonstrate exceptional commitment to the common good in society, environment and the scientific community.
