UW/H regularly sends a student team to New York to the largest UN simulation worldwide. Each student assumes the role of a delegate from a country assigned to him or her and tries to represent this country’s interests at mock UN conferences.

Comprehensive research and preparation are required to address highly specific and topical questions and to represent the assigned country adequately. But the effort is worthwhile. Patricipants learn to hold their own in debates and presentations and gain insights into the workings of international politics.

Another UW/H delegation is preparing for the long trip to the UN headquarters, this time to represent the Republic of Sudan.

"It is an honour to represent a nation of this importance and current relevance, and of course it it a tremendous challenge and means a lot of work to be done", says Mareike Bärmann of this year's organizing team. A special feature of the Witten delegation is that students are in charge of the entire project: travel arrangements, fundraising, conceptual preparation - a fact which has welded the team firmly together. Elena Weber, another member of the team: "It is great fun to prepare for such a prestigious event, the biggest UN simulation worldwide. Model United Nations at UW/H is an exciting and unique experience, it is fantastic to be part of it."

Particular thanks go to the major sponsors of the project: Wittener Universitätsgesellschaft, the Robert Bosch Foundation, and the Daniela and Jürgen Westphal Foundation.

This year's team is looking forward to the meeting in New York from April 1 to 5, 2012. Here is more information on what motivates the participants, and what they hope to gain from the congress.
