Students initiated the Teddy Bear Clinic for children from 4 to 6 to help them overcome their fear of doctors and hospitals. The playful setting is intended to stimulate positive associations.

Children are invited to bring teddy bears or other cuddly toys. They watch them being examined and "treated" by students of medicine and dental medicine.

Afterwards they play out or their observations and impressions or process them in drawings. The focus is not on medical interaction between doctor and child but on building trust in the "people in white coats".

The Teddy Bear Clinic is a regular annual event at Witten/Herdecke University and attracts approximately 500 visitors each year.

The cuddly toys go from admission to examination, from x-ray machine to operation theatre. Children can inspect an ambulance and a pharmacy where they get gummi bears and other yummy "medicine".

Anna-Greta Budelmann, Janna Scharfenberg and Fabian Dirks from the medical student council are in charge of organization.
