The educational approach in economics studies at Witten/Herdecke University is based on three cornerstones:
In order to live up to these principles, students need sufficient space to re-examine themselves repeatedly in exchange with others, and to assimilate the feedback and support they receive. A comprehensive mentoring programme promotes this process, based on a concept of empowerment with the following elements:
Orientation is of particular relevance to beginners. New UW/H students receive guidance from mentors, i.e. students in advanced semesters, whom they meet during orientation week. Each student has his or her specific mentor for questions on curricular details, general information, and introduction to university culture.
Student members of the Faculty Council
The Faculty of Management and Economics sets great store on gaining job experience, for example, in a mentor company. This experience achieves its full effect through subsequent reflection from various theoretical and practical perspectives. Students present their personal work experience in reflection modules to teachers and fellow students for joint assessment, which generates new experiential dimensions.
Student Dean’s Office
Lecturers and staff at Witten/Herdecke University are generally open to students’ questions regarding curricular, professional or even personal matters. Students who obviously will considerably exceed the standard period of study for their programme will be explicitly invited to a personal interview with the student dean. Efforts will be made to clarify the student’s individual situation and enable him or her to complete the programme with success.
“A-Coaching” stands for coaching at eye level as this offer is provided by Witten students for Witten students. A-coaches are a favourite address for questions, challenges and problems concerning study-related matters and beyond – anonymous, informal, resource-oriented and targeted. Therefore, if you need advice by a neutral person, if flat-sharing community discussions do not take you any step forwards, or you are just looking for somebody to confide in – A-Coaching provides the appropriate setting: strict confidentiality, respect and sensitivity are a matter of course.
The request will be passed on in anonymous form to the A-coaches team. A potential coach will be named to the advice seeker who may then take up the offer at his or her discretion. The offer is provided in collaboration with Prof. Arist von Schlippe and in the context of the Faculty of Management and Economics’ mentoring programme. A-coaches draw their motivation for accompanying fellow students from their strong disposition towards coaching, consulting and therapy/psychology within and outside their studies.
People walking through life without an internal map or compass will quickly lose their bearings. It is advisable to review personal values and objectives from time to time in order to define your current position and see whether the course you steer is still right. Witten/Herdecke University encourages its students in personal self-reflection on a regular basis in order to bring individual learning progress in line with general life goals.
The Witten Tandem is a mentoring format where students are introduced to alumni with similar interests. Profile questionnaires facilitate a matching of mentors and mentees for mutual benefit and inspiration. Students profit from their mentors’ wealth of experience and receive support in personal growth and in creating their own networks.
