Understanding and shaping social change
Digital transformation, challenges of the climate crisis or globalization - these are some of the major transdisciplinary challenges of societal change that the PPE-Department takes as starting points and drivers for research and teaching. Our course offerings aim to develop theoretical and methodological resources to actively understand and help shape sustainable and equitable societal development. Diversity of perspectives and methodologies, collaboration across academic disciplines, and extensive student engagement drive our teaching to adapt to the ever-changing economic and social environment. In doing so, all of our degree programs realize the triad of Understanding Problems, Reflecting, and Designing Solutions.
Research
The Department of Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) stands for research that is fundamentally anchored in disciplines, that is recognizably striving to leave well-trodden paths and/or that exhibits an explicit will to shape society. The PPE-Department supports and demands both research that leads to high-quality publications and research that does not shy away from expressing bold visions, experimenting with transdisciplinary approaches, or seeking to improve people's lives in sociopolitical terms. To make this possible, the PPE-Department promotes both a disciplinary depth of focus and a diversity of perspectives between and within disciplines that achieves a theoretically, analytically, and methodologically rich and thus fruitful spectrum.
The Department pools its research activities primarily through the “PPE Institute for Social and Institutional Change” (ISIC). The aim of the ISIC mission is to develop, promote and make visible the unique approach of PPE research to social and institutional change topics. PPE research goes far beyond traditional multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary approaches by combining philosophy, political science and economics in a transdisciplinary scientific ecology.
