The educational approach in economics studies at Witten/Herdecke University is based on three cornerstones:

  • Expertise and problem-solving skills
Autonomous studies require that students rise to the challenge of projects, find creative solutions to economic issues, and develop entrepreneurial spirit.
  • Personal growth
A consistent process of personal growth needs to complement the acquisition of subject-related expertise.
  • General education
The faculty founders had the vision of an “educated economist” (Alfred Herrhausen). Fundamental studies in liberal arts and humanities convey a well-rounded humanist education and help to avoid tunnel vision.

In order to live up to these principles, students need sufficient space to re-examine themselves repeatedly in exchange with others, and to assimilate the feedback and support they receive. A comprehensive mentoring programme promotes this process, based on a concept of empowerment with the following elements:

  • Support and assistance through the expertise, experience and contacts of others, be it peers, students in advanced semesters, alumni or lecturers
  • Self-reflection and self-organisation; acquisition of additional competences
  • Introduction to university culture
  • Career services

The mentoring programme has six different components that complement each other:

Peer Mentoring
Group Mentoring
Individual mentoring by lecturers
A-Coaching
Personal self-reflection
