Every year, students from all over the world come to Witten/Herdecke University (UW/H) to study one or more semesters here. We launched our initiative to make it easier for international students to start their studies at our University and their everyday life in Germany. We are the team of the "Erasmus Student Network (ESN) Witten/Herdecke". Our initiative was founded in 2013 under the name of Witten International Network and then joined ESN Germany in 2017.

ESN Germany is an association of 38 local student Erasmus initiatives, whose members work on a voluntary basis and support more than 10,000 Erasmus students every year. With 520 participating universities in 41 countries, ESN is one of the world's largest student organisations.

In addition to the Erasmus students, who usually only study for one semester at UW/H, international students also come to our University to pursue an English-language master's degree.

Our mission statement is: Connect, integrate and experience!

What do we do specifically?

  • Support: We support international students before and after their arrival in Witten. Above all, this includes help with finding an apartment or a room in a shared apartment, as well as tips on how to get here. In the first few days at the University, we are on hand with advice and assistance to help with everyday problems.
  • Events: During the semester we organise various events for and with international students. This can be a cosy evening in a pub, a day trip in the area or a study tour. All events are public and everyone is welcome!
  • Networking: As a student initiative, the primary aim is to create networks between international and local students. For example, we offer a buddy programme and regularly organise cultural evenings at which internationals can present their home country and university.
  • Internationalisation: Finally, we want to promote the internationalisation of our University. We see UW/H as a place of diversity and cultural coexistence – with the firm belief that everyone can benefit from it.
