New perspectives for narcolepsy therapy - and a well-deserved award!
Frederike Tepel, a doctoral student at UniWH, has discovered in her research that there are ways to counteract the symptoms of narcolepsy without medication.

Narcolepsy, a chronic sleep disorder, presents those affected with major challenges: Extreme daytime sleepiness and sudden sleep attacks characterise everyday life.
Frederike Tepel, a doctoral student at UniWH, has discovered in her research that there are ways to counteract the symptoms of narcolepsy without medication.
She has now been awarded the "Dr Werner and Raphael Müller Prize" at the annual conference of the German Society for Sleep Research and Sleep Medicine (DGSM) for this research. Every year, the prize honours excellent scientific work that deals with the connection between narcolepsy and metabolic disorders.
Her study provides impressive findings:
- Ketogenic diet (low carbohydrate, high fat) significantly reduces extreme fatigue.
- Regular exercise shows similar positive effects.
- Both approaches improve the physical and mental quality of life.
- And they have no side effects - a major advantage compared to drug treatments.
"The results are groundbreaking - diet and exercise open up new avenues for a better quality of life," explains Frederike Tepel.
Congratulations on this well-deserved award!
