Threatened democracies - will authoritarian forms of rule determine the future?
At the Witten Citizens' University, Prof Dr Birger P. Priddat from Witten/Herdecke University will talk about the global advance of authoritarian regimes and the challenges facing democratic associations.

There are legitimate concerns that the USA is turning from a democracy into an authoritarian regime, led by a president who wants to be re-elected - against the constitution. Authoritarian forms of rule are also spreading worldwide and democracies are under threat. Is such a development also to be feared in Germany?
Prof Dr Birger P. Priddat, Professor Emeritus of Economics and Philosophy at Witten/Herdecke University (UW/H), will address this and other questions in his lecture at the Witten Citizens' University. Priddat will analyse current developments and show that our democracy in Germany is not so much endangered by the dismantling of the state or the undermining of the constitution, but - on the contrary - by increasing institutionalisation and regulation. Together with the audience, he wants to discuss how a new democratic participation can succeed under these conditions - and what we can do to counter the increasing disenchantment with politics.
The lecture will take place on Monday, 12 May, from 8 pm at Haus Witten, Ruhrstraße 86. Admission costs 7 euros at the box office (5 euros reduced for students). The Citizens' University is a joint event organised by the vhs Witten | Wetter | Herdecke and the WittenLab. Zukunftslabor Studium fundamentale of the Witten/Herdecke University.
