IntVeM

Integrative care model for migrant cancer patients with language barriers

Project overview

The care of people with oncological diseases is associated with a variety of challenges. Language and communication barriers in nursing and medical care can lead to inadequate care and low or inappropriate use of healthcare services. As a result, health deficits and symptoms may not be detected or diagnosed and treated too late. Patients may not receive care that aligns with their needs and preferences.

Patients with a migration background and language barriers, as well as their relatives, may experience discrimination, which can lead to increased inequality in the short, medium and long term - even beyond the healthcare context. Effectively addressing language barriers is therefore essential in providing equitable care for this population group.

The aim of the IntVeM study is to implement a structured information management and aftercare service, coordinated by oncology nurses and supported by digital tools and standardised intervention schedules. The aim is to improve patient education, health literacy, patient satisfaction and quality of care. It also aims to promote dialogue between healthcare providers and strengthen interprofessional collaboration.
