General Practice Day 2025

A warm welcome!
Topic: "Security in the face of uncertainty"
Dear colleagues, medical assistants and practice teams, dear students,
Our joint General Practice Day is also a highlight of the year for our institutes. We look forward to seeing you!
As GPs and medical assistants, we have to deal with uncertainty every day. But in retrospect, is a wrong decision a mistake or rather a pseudo-mistake? Norbert Donner-Banzoff's key lecture opens up a new perspective on our work in the practice.
Court proceedings on medical malpractice are instructive. General practitioner proceedings are always reviewed by general practitioner experts. We present cases. How would you decide?
The workshops offer practical exercises in small groups, here the reference to the further training offer for MFAs and those authorised to provide further training.
This day of general practice is intended to provide security in the face of uncertainty.
We look forward to interesting discussions and welcome you on behalf of Witten/Herdecke University and Ruhr-Universität Bochum!
Klaus Weckbecker, Achim Mortsiefer and Horst Christian Vollmar

Programme
Keynotes
- Keynote: Errors and people. How do we distinguish between real and perceived errors in diagnosis?
Prof. Dr Norbert Donner-Banzhoff, MHSc
There is a lot of talk about errors in healthcare. However, due to the high level of uncertainty, GP diagnoses appear to be particularly susceptible. In hospitals, improvements are discussed after mistakes, because the aim is to learn from mistakes. However, when it comes to diagnosis in GP practices, it is often not clear whether a mistake has been made at all. Are there perhaps situations from which we should not learn? What is an error, what is a pseudo-error? - Keynote: The doctor in court - how would you decide?
Prof. Dr Klaus Weckbecker
The thought of imminent legal proceedings for medical malpractice makes us feel insecure. But how do these proceedings work in reality? We discuss pitfalls and strategies using examples from the work of medical experts.
Workshops
mornings
- Less is more! Effective strategies for discontinuing medication
Prof. Dr Achim Mortsiefer
Older patients with multimorbidity are exposed to high risks such as memory impairment, falls and hospitalisation due to taking often five or more medications daily (polypharmacy). In this case-based workshop, specific tips and strategies for discontinuing medication (deprescribing) will be presented and discussed. - KWWL: Communication & psychosocial issues in the GP practice (Part 1)
Dr Lucas Bisplinghoff
This workshop will focus on communication aspects in the context of the initial anamnestic consultation and discuss participatory decision-making with patients using practical examples. Frequent psychosocial issues in GP practice will be discussed together with the participants. MFA forum in the morning: De-escalation training
Dr rer. medic. Anja Maja Demisch, Michaela Maas
Conflicts in the practice - challenges, action goals and strategies for de-escalationWhat are typical escalating situations that MFAs face on a daily basis? How can these challenges be de-escalated? How do these situations arise, what explanatory models are there and how do I resolve them?
In this workshop, we want to work together to develop strategies and practical tips for dealing with escalating situations in GP practices.- Of errors and people - case discussions
Prof. Dr Norbert Donner-Banzhoff, MHSc
The workshop follows on from the keynote speech. The pseudo error method presented there will now be applied to specific cases and discussed. Participants are invited to contribute their own experiences (possible misdiagnoses, arbitration bodies and liability procedures). As a rule, these are cases in which it later transpired that the original diagnosis was incorrect.
in the afternoon
"Damn, what do I do now?" -Safety in education and training
Prof. Bert Huenges, MD, MME, Thomas Bandorski, MD
As educators and trainers, we accompany the process from the justified uncertainty of the first-year student to the justified certainty of the experienced specialist in general practice.
But how do we recognise uncertainties, over- or underestimation of competences or possible blind spots in our learners? In the KWWL train-the-trainer workshop for trainers and teaching physicians, Thomas Bandorski and Bert Huenges present methods for assessing the learner's competence and recognising strengths and weaknesses without the classic character of an examination.
- KWWL: Communication & psychosocial issues in the GP practice (part 2)
Lucas Bisplinghoff, MD
This workshop deals with communicative aspects of the initial anamnestic consultation and discusses participatory decision-making with patients using practical examples. Frequent psychosocial issues in GP practices will be discussed together with the participants. - MFA forum in the afternoon: Resuscitation training - tips and tricks for a relaxed approach to GP emergencies
Dr Nils Thiessen, MME & Michaela Maas
Here you will learn the basics of resuscitation, including ventilation, in a safe atmosphere. We also discuss how to work in a structured way using checklists in difficult situations and the need for debriefing. - Stress management and mindfulness in everyday practice
Susanne Kersten
In this workshop, you will learn practical strategies for stress management and mindfulness. Through short, everyday exercises and practical tips, you will strengthen your resilience, promote your inner calm and improve your ability to remain calm even in challenging situations. This workshop offers space for dialogue and gives you concrete ideas that you can implement immediately in your everyday working life.
