Witten/Herdecke University aims to test new forms of teaching and learning, to develop innovative degree courses and research approaches, and to break new ground in organizing higher education. We see this as our mission in society.

The decision to apply for a place at UW/H implies a well-considered decision against state universities. Applicants submit their documents, pass selection procedures and are willing to invest the equivalent of a middle-class car into their education. Tuition fees are UW/H students’ contribution to the successful operation of their university.
Germany’s first private university was founded in Witten in 1983. We feel committed to Humboldt’s educational ideas and interpret them in new ways. Our focus is on the individual student, the development of his or her personal preferences and potentials.
