Needless to say, professional qualification is a major objective of studies in Witten. But we believe that more is involved than mere methodological competences and knowledge transfer. Future leaders and decision-makers need a broad-based education - a type of education which exceeds the boundaries of a single discipline in order to become effective in the field of work and convey navigational competences for the future. This is what we offer in two respects: we always consider economic science in wider scientific, social and political contexts; in addition, fundamental studies offer essential scope for reflection and a change of perspective and thus help to prevent tunnel vision.
The Bachelor programme in Management starts with fundamentals in methodology. Only those who perfectly master their craft can expect to find viable solutions in future. Training in methodology is therefore not a tedious obligation but always refers to practical contexts and feasibility – and thus forms part of the freestyle programme. Having successfully completed this training in fundamentals, students are well equipped to address subsequent curricular challenges. This applies to advanced courses as well as to interesting internships and research projects.
You are interested in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) but can also imagine a career in Management? You are looking for international adventures, but not only of the touristic kind? You want to position yourself internationally without compromising your chances on the German labour market? You want the best of both worlds? Then the double degree programme organized in collaboration with the University of Victoria/Canada is perfect for you. After two years of the UW/H Bachelor programme in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE), participants transfer to Victoria into the BCom curriculum. Upon graduation they are awarded both degrees, acquired at two universities in two countries and two languages.
The Witten Congress for Family Businesses is the largest event of its kind in Europe and a regular annual occasion at Witten/Herdecke University since 1988. It offers a suitable context for the immediate transfer of academic findings into practice and for exchange and discussion among business families. A specific feature is that a student team is in charge of the organization. Representatives of owner families find an ideal and protected setting for debate, advice and support. Consultants, banks and the press are not admitted.
One-sidedness can make life easier, but is ultimately not really helpful. Changes in perspective are needed to produce viable insights. This is why we offer not only one school of thought but also alternative approaches to economics. Students receive a comprehensive and comparative overview of methods and concepts. This helps to train judgment and prevent tunnel vision. What we expect from you is that you do not choose the easiest way but challenge us and yourself.
Entrepreneurial spirit is one of the specific features of Witten/Herdecke University and its Faculty of Management and Economics. Our students assume responsibility for curricular organization and themselves at an early time. They discover, test and school their talents in a variety of format and settings, e.g. the prize-winning Start-up Workshop, in student initiatives and business activities. These may take the form of companies they set up themselves, social projects or initiatives to enhance campus life. What students learn in this manner will become an asset in their future professional life.
It is easy to claim a high degree of practical orientation. We substantiate this claim via a comprehensive network of companies, alumni and experts from practice:
Independent Projects serve two purposes at the same time: we encourage students to autonomously identify and explore research topics at an early time in their studies. They have the option to include specific issues into the curriculum on a flexible basis which cannot be addressed in regular modules. This is how Witten students proactively contribute to curricular organization and determine their individual focus.

The educational approach in economics studies at Witten/Herdecke University is based on:
In order to live up to these principles, students need sufficient space to re-examine themselves repeatedly in exchange with others, and to assimilate the feedback and support they receive. Our comprehensive mentoring programme promotes this process.
