Department of Nursing Science strengthens cooperation with practice

A carer has her arm around the shoulders of a man and a woman. Everyone is laughing, the man is holding a building block, the woman is building a tower out of blocks.

Collaboration with health care systems is an integral part of the work of the School of Nursing Science at Witten/Herdecke University (UW/H). Co-operations are entered into for the purpose of joint research, but also for the training of students of nursing science and community health nursing. This is why the "Nursing Practice and Research" network was founded. In addition to long-standing collaborations, the network has now been expanded to include new cooperation partners. The School of Nursing Science also intends to add further collaborations to the network in order to promote the academisation of nurses who work in nursing practice.

New cooperation partners are the Protestant retirement home Lohmar / Protestant retirement home Wahlscheid, the Florence Nightingale Hospital Düsseldorf, the University Hospital Frankfurt am Main and the Dortmund Clinical Centre. The School of Nursing Science also works with the Bergmannsheil Berufsgenossenschaftliches Universitätsklinikum Bochum, the Diakonie Düsseldorf, the Klinikum Lüdenscheid, the Landschaftsverband Westfalen Lippe (LWL) Zentrum für Forensische Psychiatrie (ZFP) Lippstadt and the DRK-Schwesternschaft Bonn as long-standing cooperation partners.

Internships, practical experience and career development

The partnerships provide students on the Master's degree programmes in Nursing Science and Community Health Nursing with internships. For example, you can carry out your own practice development projects here, but you can also take advantage of the opportunity to send your own employees to the School of Nursing Science for their Master's degree programme in order to enable them to develop their careers in their own company and anchor nursing science there.

Stephan Deimel, Director of Nursing at the co-operation partner LWL-ZFP Lippstadt, explains this decision as follows: "The LWL - ZFP Lip-pstadt has been cooperating with Witten/Herdecke University for 20 years. It is important to the nursing management to incorporate findings from nursing science into practice and everyday ward life in a structured manner by academically trained nursing staff. Advanced and specialised nursing interventions and evidence-based care in complex care situations are to be anchored in the interdisciplinary care process. A further aim is to utilise the nursing experts in the direct clinical care and support of patients and their relatives within the framework of theory-practice networking."
