Administrative bodies at Witten/Herdecke University

University in self-administration

The administrative bodies and organs are an expression of the self-administration of Witten/Herdecke University. They characterise the content and goals of the university and demonstrate the discourse that takes place. They are made up of members from all groups at the university: Professors:inside, students, academic and administrative staff. As a rule, the different groups of university members elect members to the administrative bodies to represent their respective interests.

Executive Board

In the area of tension between a humanistic mission, academic aspirations and an entrepreneurial attitude, it is the task of the Executive Board, together with the members of the university, to direct all energy towards a common goal: to create a space in which researchers, teaching staff, students, employees and other people can develop their potential to the best of their ability and contribute to shaping a sustainable and just society.

Senate

The Senate is the highest academic decision-making body at Witten/Herdecke University. It plays a key role in the strategic orientation of the university in teaching, studies and research. The Senate's tasks are set out in the North Rhine-Westphalia University Act and Witten/Herdecke University's Statutes and Regulations. The Senate includes members from all academic units and status groups of the university.

The Senate

  • participates in the formation of the Executive Board and the Supervisory Board,
  • comments on the university development plan submitted by the Executive Board, the business plan and the medium-term corporate framework plan,
  • decides on the University Statutes and Regulations,
  • issues framework regulations and other regulations as well as amendments to these,
  • discusses reports from the Executive Board,
  • decides on appointments of professors and
  • and awards academic honours.

Supervisory Board

On 1 December 2009, Witten/Herdecke University established a Supervisory Board made up of renowned leaders and experts from the fields of business, science, education and health. The Supervisory Board, which is elected by the university's associates, acts as a neutral administrative body to monitor and control the activities of the management.

Board of Trustees

Personalities from business and culture, politics and science, teaching and practice make up the Board of Trustees of Witten/Herdecke University. They are all united by their enthusiasm for promoting the university in the long term and actively participating in its work. As members, they support the university financially and ideally, act as partners to the Executive Board in an advisory capacity in matters of financing and strategic orientation, realise innovations at the university as providers of ideas and pave the way for new projects as mentors. They also see themselves as ambassadors for the university to the outside world. Every two years, the Board of Trustees organises a highly endowed funding competition and supports academic projects and student initiatives at UW/H with up to 20,000 euros.

Wittener Universitätsgesellschaft e. V. (WUG)

The Wittener Universitätsgesellschaft e. V. (WUG) was founded in 1998 with the idea of bringing the city of Witten, the Ennepe-Ruhr district and the central Ruhr area and the university closer together. Since its inception, the WUG has supported the social commitment of the university and its students as well as research and teaching in a variety of ways. The WUG is organised as an association.

The aim of the Stiftung Private Universität Witten/Herdecke is to ensure the independence and financial stability of Witten/Herdecke University. The endowed funds are invested in accordance with a sustainable investment strategy. As the second largest shareholder in the university, the foundation guarantees the university's private self-administration.

Faculty student councils and student representatives

The faculty student councils and student representatives at the UW/H bring students' interests, suggestions and problems to the university's self-administration. They organise, promote and coordinate university and subject policy issues as well as the social, cultural and societal commitment of students.

The students are organised in the following student representative bodies, which are divided into study areas:


The faculty student councils for Psychology and Medicine and Nursing Science pool the interests of the students of the Faculty of Health in the student council.

  • Faculty Offices, which are the central administrative and coordinating bodies of the departments
  • Examination boards, which ensure compliance with examination regulations and the proper conduct of examinations
  • Doctoral and habilitation committees, which fulfil the tasks defined in the rules of procedure and doctoral degree regulations of the faculties and in the habilitation regulations of the UW/H
  • Research committees that promote and coordinate the research activities of the chairs and other research institutions
