Chair for Business Administration and Family Entrepreneurship (WIFU)

Welcome to the website of the WIFU Endowed Chair for Corporate Entrepreneurship & Digitalization in Family Business.

As a chair, we started our work at the Witten/Herdecke University at the beginning of 2020. The focus of our teaching and research is digital transformation and (different types of) innovation in family business. In doing so, we pursue a research approach in which phenomena are examined both at the level of the institution and its framework conditions and from the perspective of the individual and his or her perception. Our research is based on empirical data, most of which comes from our target group - family businesses. Depending on the research question, we use a wide range of qualitative and quantitative research methods to provide both theoretical scientific insights and relevant implications for business practice.

We stand for research-based, practice-oriented teaching and actively involve students in ongoing research and practice projects. More information about our courses, projects, staff, and relevant content can be found throughout this website.

If you are missing content or have any suggestions, please feel free to contact us directly.

    With all best regards,

In its research, the Chair essentially addresses the three interrelated areas of "innovation", "transformation" and "digitalization" in the context of family businesses. In this interplay, we research how family businesses can meet current, disruptive challenges such as new digital technologies through active innovation and transformation management. The focus of the chair includes the following research questions:

    • How should digital transformation projects be managed?
    • What are the drivers and barriers of digital innovation and transformation in family businesses?
    • What are the special features (strengths and challenges) of family businesses compared to businesses without a family background
    • Family businesses with regard to digital transformation?
    • What digital competencies are required for a successful digital transformation or are built up to achieve digital maturity?
    • Which digital business models are suitable for family businesses?
    • How should the cooperation between family businesses and start-ups be designed?
    • How are corporate entrepreneurship initiatives implemented in family businesses?
    • How are family businesses integrated into ecosystems and how can interfaces be established or strengthened?

Since our research considers the aforementioned phenomena both at the level of the institution and at the level of individuals,
we combine institutional economics and behavioral science perspectives and theories. Our research is primarily
quantitative-empirical in nature. Nevertheless, we also rely on methodological diversity and, depending on the research question, apply a broad spectrum of
qualitative and quantitative research methods, depending on the research question, in order to provide both theoretical scientific insights and relevant
implications for practice. The chair makes use of extensive national and international cooperations and is closely integrated into the scientific community.
As a result, in a recent study by Stanford University from 2020 that looked at citation data, Prof. Dr. Thomas Clauß was ranked among the top 2% of all scientists and scholars worldwide. He is one of the 100 best German-speaking researchers in management sciences under 40 in the current ranking of researchers by Wirtschaftswoche.

    Current Research Projects

Ongoing research project: "Digital transformation in German SMEs, especially in family businesses
Ongoing research project: "Digital Maturity of the Entrepreneurial Family and the Family Business".

One of the main competences of our chair is the processing, linking, and provision of research results for practical use. These can be found in numerous practical publications. We offer companies regular lectures, forums and workshops to benefit from our research results. Our courses are also based on a close link between theory and praxis. We work together with praxis partners in several modules and guide students to solve real practical problems. In addition, we organize a guest lecture series every semester in which renowned representatives of corporate practice share their experiences and insights with our network.
