How does everyday family life influence our health?
The Professorship of Health Psychology is dedicated to research and education on the interactions between everyday family life and mental and physical health. Our aim is to understand the social mechanisms that influence health in couple and family systems in order to derive effective prevention and intervention strategies. We place particular emphasis on analysing everyday interactions and their long-term effects on health.

Research
Our team is interested in the role that everyday family life plays for the mental and physical health of family systems. Our research aims to identify the processes which underlie the relationship between social interactions on health, particularly how thesese processes unfold in the everyday family environment. In three lines of research, we investigate
- how social interactions in the context of everyday couple and family life can impair or strengthen health;
- how everyday behavioural observations and intensive longitudinal methods can be used to analyse data from dynamic family systems and;
- how (and for whom) the identified mechanisms can be translated into effective prevention and intervention measures.

Teaching
In our teaching, we focus intensively on the complex interactions between family dynamics and health. Our teaching programme covers a broad spectrum, from basic health psychology to special aspects of couple and family psychology and advanced methods of dyadic data analysis. We impart both theoretical knowledge and practical skills to optimally prepare our students for the challenges in the field of health psychology. We integrate the latest research findings into our courses to ensure a practical and well-founded education.
