Emotions study

Loneliness, emotion regulation and personality in childhood and adolescence

Project overview

The Emotions Study investigates the relationship between loneliness, emotion regulation and personality traits in children and adolescents. Research findings show that loneliness at a young age represents a relevant developmental risk and is often associated with difficulties in emotion regulation and certain personality traits.

Another component of the project is the German-language validation of the short version of the Dimensional Personality Symptom Item Pool (DIPSI-B). This instrument measures maladaptive personality traits in children and adolescents and is increasingly being used internationally. The validation of this version contributes to improving research into child and adolescent personality in German-speaking countries.

Data is collected via an online survey in which parents provide information on their own characteristics, the parent-child relationship and their child's behaviour. In addition, children aged 10 and over can complete their own questionnaire on selected child-related constructs, so that both self-reports and reports from others are available.

The aim of the project is to gain a better understanding of the relationships between personality traits, emotion regulation and loneliness and to analyse similarities and differences in the characteristics of parents and children as well as the agreement between parent and child reports on child characteristics.
