Utopias in times of uncertainty

Project description

Science fiction stories allow us to immerse ourselves in alien worlds and temporarily escape the constraints of everyday life. They open up spaces for the development of humanistic utopias, which initially represent a field of intellectual experimentation that can provide orientation in uncertain times. In this way, the genre fulfills both escapist needs and the desire for a meaningful engagement with visions of the future.

The project is divided into two parts:

  1. Thematic reading preferences of science fiction readers
  2. Utopias against resignation – writing short stories in the genres of science fiction, climate fiction, and solar punk

Thematic reading preferences

The research project therefore addresses the question of why utopian and dystopian science fiction stories exert a fascination on readers, particularly in the context of fears about the future and social uncertainty. The focus is on the reading preferences of different types of readers, who oscillate between universe-fascinated world builders, escapist adventurers, and visionary thinkers.

In order to capture these dimensions, empirical surveys with readers and qualitative interviews with authors of science fiction novels are being conducted. The aim is to develop a comprehensive picture of the function, impact, and relevance of utopian narratives in the present day.

What are PERRY RHODAN fans' favourite things to read?

And what kind of readers are they?

As part of a cooperation project between the PERRY RHODAN FanCentre and Witten/Herdecke University, we are researching what interests and inspires PERRY RHODAN readers about their series.

Utopias against resignation

Writing short stories in the genre of science fiction, climate fiction and solar punk

Science fiction literature has predicted the future far too well. Current social, ecological and transhumanist developments are hardly conducive to an optimistic view of the future. However, utopian science fiction, sobering climate fiction and positivist solar punk have produced counter-concepts that can inspire.

Authors present their ideas of a future worth living in, characterised by humanism and solidarity, in which the well-being of all takes centre stage. They develop theoretical concepts and visions of how to counter the threat of climate catastrophe and global conflicts over raw materials and living space.

As part of the event series, students learn to write their thoughts, emotions and visions as anti-dystopian short stories. We take inspiration from researchers and authors, reflect on what we have heard, resonate with our short stories and try to find new perspectives - especially in the context of the planned professional fields: Utopias against resignation.

Finally, the best short stories will be presented to an interested public, where the participants will lecture their stories themselves.

The event series is designed as a StuFu event for the summer semester 2026 with both external and internal speakers and authors.
