The team of the BMBF-funded research project "Climate Change and Global Finance at the Crossroads" is organising an international stakeholder conference in Berlin on Friday, 4 April. In this three-year project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the nine researchers, who are based at Prof Dr Joscha Wullweber's Chair of Political Economy, Transformation and Sustainability and at the Institute for Ecological Economy Research, have been investigating how financial flows can be effectively steered towards sustainability.

The conference is now inviting representatives from the groups that the project has researched from various angles: From banks, regulators and central banks, to civil society organisations. Project manager Prof. Dr Joscha Wullweber summarises the experiences of recent years as follows: "At the beginning of the project, we were faced with the apparent contradiction that the financial sector was described as the major lever for climate protection on the one hand. On the other hand, however, there was far too little increase in green financing and the financing of climate-damaging investments remained high." As a result, the studies showed that there are considerable limits to how the financial sector alone can promote green investments, that state regulation and programmes are necessary and that private financial players themselves are in favour of stricter regulation if it is to be effective. The latter applies in particular to the financing of climate-damaging projects, where regulation must significantly extend the time horizon of risks.

Conference participants are invited to discuss the project's policy proposals, which show how the financial sector can make its contribution to a climate-neutral economy and what forms of state intervention and regulation are necessary.

The event will take place with a selected group of participants. However, we would like to cordially invite you to the online launch event of the project's policy recommendations on 30 June. Further information on registration will follow via [tra:ce].
