We look beyond dentistry

The School of Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine is committed both to high-quality teaching and research across all departments of dentistry and to a strong commitment to society.

Inclusive healthcare is close to our hearts. We are the only university in Germany to have a dedicated department for the treatment of people with disabilities and, through our own Chair of Special Care Dentistry, we make the specialism of disability-oriented dentistry an integral part of the degree programme.

We place great emphasis on prevention: we not only teach this approach but also put it into practice in dental treatment and research across our chairs, institutes and centres.

Teaching at the School of Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine

On our Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine degree programme, we train young people to become skilled dentists. The programme covers all areas of dentistry, from basic dental care through to advanced therapeutic procedures.

We place particular emphasis on ensuring that our students gain a clear understanding of their future profession: through a practical approach from day one, we equip them with the necessary knowledge to become dentists who prioritise the well-being of their patients.

Through our continuing professional development courses and our Master’s programme, we offer various options for additional dental qualifications and specialisation: qualified dentists can train to become specialist dentists in the fields of orthodontics, oral surgery and periodontology.

Our two part-time Master’s degree programmes enable dentists and maxillofacial surgeons to specialise further in the disciplines of implantology and aesthetic facial surgery.

As a department, we bring together seven chairs, where we teach and conduct research in the various specialist disciplines of dentistry, oral and maxillofacial medicine.

Research and Publications

Technical expertise and forward thinking are the building blocks of innovative research and the best possible patient care. As a department, we conduct both basic research and clinical trials across all departments of dentistry. Materials science, preventive research, implantology, the adaptation of treatments for different patient groups, and research into bone and tissue regeneration – through our scientific work, we gain valuable insights into dental health. In doing so, we take an interdisciplinary approach and rely on close collaboration between our specialist departments and partner organisations.

Together with the network of the Witten Centre of Dental Research, our department brings together valuable expertise in dentistry in a single location and promotes scientific exchange between experts in healthcare and industry.

Through our scientific work, we provide new insights into the field of oral health and develop sustainable therapeutic approaches. We receive significant support in this from the Fördergemeinschaft Zahnmedizin e. V. (Dental Research Funding Association). Through targeted project funding and grants, the association works with us to drive the School of Dentistry’s development forward.

Witten/Herdecke University is also one of the few institutions worldwide to have a dental telemetry station. This technology is used to investigate the impact of food and drink on dental health. In addition to research, our accredited telemetry station forms the basis for the award of the ‘Zahnmännchen mit Schirm’ quality mark for certified dental-health products.

University Dental Clinic

At the heart of dentistry, oral and maxillofacial medicine lies the Witten/Herdecke University Dental Clinic. Here, we practise dentistry to the highest standards and train young people to become dentists. From preventive check-ups and treatments to complex, interdisciplinary therapies, we cover the full range of dental services. With particular empathy and expertise, we are also dedicated to treating specific patient groups. These include, amongst others, children, anxious patients and people with disabilities.

Dental health for all

In our department, we embrace and encourage social engagement. We encourage our students to ask themselves what society and healthcare should look like in the future – and how they themselves wish to play an active role in shaping them. In this way, our students use their specialist skills to get involved in projects both on their own doorstep and around the world. A prime example is the dental project in Nepal, which grew out of student initiatives. The aim is to improve dental care in Nepal and, above all, to raise awareness of the importance of oral health, particularly amongst children. By putting their own ideas into practice and getting involved, students experience a sense of self-efficacy and grow as individuals.

Dentistry for people with disabilities

Inclusive healthcare for people with disabilities is still not a given in Germany today. At Witten/Herdecke University, disability-oriented dentistry (BOZ) has been a high priority since the very beginning. The Dental Clinic at Witten/Herdecke University is the only university dental clinic in Germany with a Chair of Special Care Dentistry and a department dedicated to disability-oriented dentistry. Here, we live and teach inclusion!

Luther’s Laundrette

Luther’s Laundrette is a facility run by the Diakonie Hagen/Ennepetal’s homeless support service. Here, people facing difficult life circumstances receive, amongst other things, free dental care. For dentistry students at Witten/Herdecke University, working at ‘Luther’s Laundrette’ is an integral part of their degree programme. Together, we aim to contribute to the common good, promote destigmatisation and break down barriers to engagement.
