School of MedicineWe put people first

We take a holistic and innovative approach to medical training

Daring to try something new, breaking new ground and reforming the training of future doctors: these ideas were the driving force behind the founding of Witten/Herdecke University in 1983, and they remain part of our DNA to this day. With our model degree programme in Medicine, we – the School of Medicine – are setting new standards and training young people to become discerning, empathetic doctors.

Teaching at the School of Medicine

Further developments and necessary reforms in the health care system require courageous and qualified visionaries and decision-makers. The chairs and professorships in the School of Medicine deal not only with the various departments of medicine – from general practice to cell nucleus architecture – but also, amongst other things, with digital health, didactics in the health care system and the further development of the model degree programme in medicine.

Our institutes and centres

We embody the three-pronged approach: teaching, research and patient care. We pursue this approach through our affiliated institutes and centres. These bring together researchers and doctors who are rethinking medicine and who, whilst utilising state-of-the-art technologies, always keep the patient at the heart of their work.

Research and publications

Knowledge leads to world-class medicine: The School of Medicine addresses all key areas of health research.

These include both basic biomedical and clinical research, as well as healthcare and epidemiological research, which encompasses observational studies in humans.

Furthermore, the model degree programme in Medicine is examined and evaluated as part of educational research. In all our research activities, we place great emphasis on networking and the professional exchange between our own experts and our collaborative partners.
