Nursing creates
knowledge

We are committed to shaping nursing in a personalised, evidence-based and innovative way. Our school of nursing science is a pioneer in Germany: for almost 30 years, we have been conducting research and teaching with the aim of improving nursing practice for carers, those in need of care and their families.

We prepare the next generation of talent for academic research and practice, and develop career-friendly courses and continuing professional development programmes for our students. We strive to disseminate scientific findings and contribute to the networking of nursing researchers at national and international level.

News from the School of Nursing Science

Teaching at the School of Nursing Science

Our range of courses and study formats are designed to be compatible with work and personal life, and to enable students to complete their degrees within the standard period of study. Our departments and professorships develop new concepts and research methods in nursing practice. We find answers to complex questions in nursing practice and place great emphasis on research-based learning and critical reflection.

Research and Publications

The School of Nursing Science is committed to excellence in research into interdisciplinary healthcare.

Our research focuses on:

  • the needs and requirements of people requiring care throughout their lives,
  • the family situation, relatives and the social environment,
  • the potential for development in nursing practice, and
  • current and future societal and health challenges.

These and other questions guide our research:

  • What might dementia-friendly hospitals look like?
  • What information do people need to realise their potential for self-care?
  • How can families and selected groups of people affected by the condition be supported in coping with illness?

University bibliography

Theses at the School of Nursing Science

The School of Nursing Science has compiled all degree theses since 1999 into a single PDF document. This document lists all Bachelor’s, Master’s and doctoral theses in chronological order by year and by the names of the graduates. If you are interested in a thesis or require it for secondary use, you may request the contact details of the relevant authors from the Office of Student Affairs for Nursing Science so that you can enquire about obtaining a copy of the thesis.

Cooperation Network for Nursing Practice and Research

The Nursing Practice & Research Cooperation Network brings together practice, education and research institutions in the nursing and health care system with students and staff at the UW/H. Together, we develop and test innovative projects for nursing practice. The network promotes the academisation of nursing, advances research based on the ‘real-world laboratory’ principle, and establishes practice development as a field of research.

Doctoral studies, PhD programmes and postdoctoral university lecturing qualifications

The UW/H paves the way for academic careers in nursing research and supports further academic training.

Our School of Nursing Science supervises numerous doctoral students. Since the establishment of our first doctoral college in nursing science in Germany, numerous nursing scientists have completed their doctoral studies and now work as professors at German and international universities.

Our alumni are active in many different fields: they work as nursing experts in all settings, are involved in professional or health policy, teach and conduct research at educational institutions, or manage healthcare organisations.
