Rethinking GP care
The Uniambulanz Witten is a general practice located on the campus of Witten/Herdecke University. Based on a concept that is unique in Germany, new approaches to outpatient primary care are applied here under scientific supervision. The medical work focuses primarily on health and effective ways to strengthen and maintain it in the long term.
This is underpinned by a comprehensive range of general practice and internal medicine services, alongside a holistic view of individual health. In addition, a number of evidence-based naturopathic approaches are incorporated into treatments and consultations. A unique programme of health promotion courses rounds off the services on offer.

Our services
Internal medicine and general practice
The medical treatments and consultations cover the full spectrum of modern general practice and internal medicine, with a focus on general practice.
The medical team at the Witten University Outpatient Clinic treats, advises and supports patients in cases such as:
- acute infections and chronic conditions
- metabolic disorders
- digestive problems
- lifestyle-related conditions
Health promotion programme
On an optional basis and as required, all patients with statutory or private health insurance can take part in an eight-week health promotion course. The course explains how stress works, why stress responses are, at first, perfectly normal and beneficial, and how we can maintain our focus in difficult situations. In addition, the course, spread over eight modules, teaches practical strategies for everyday life that can improve long-term health through targeted behavioural and lifestyle changes.
As a concept unique in Germany, the outpatient clinic offers an advanced course which builds on the eight-week course and focuses on and consolidates specific topics. The advanced course comprises seven modules and runs over a period of seven months.

Mind-body medicine in practice
The concept of the Uniambulanz was developed over a period of several years by our research team, led by Prof. Dr med. Tobias Esch. The scientific basis for our services is the so-called BERN Concept, a stress management programme developed by Tobias Esch. It is based on the concept of mind-body medicine, which was developed at Harvard Medical School in Boston.
The Uniambulanz in Witten is the first facility of its kind in Germany to have firmly integrated mind-body medicine in this form into (general) medical care.
Scientific support
As a university-affiliated institution, the outpatient clinic also serves as a centre for medical research and teaching. Patient care is evaluated, supported and further developed conceptually under the scientific leadership of Prof. Dr med Tobias Esch at the Institute for Integrative Healthcare and Health Promotion.
Supporting our students’ education
Students at Witten/Herdecke University can work at the University Outpatient Clinic at various stages of their degree programme and broaden their knowledge through practical experience – for example, during the ‘Outpatient Healthcare’ block placement, during the clinical year (PJ) or by supporting patients with chronic conditions (longitudinal patient care).
At the University Outpatient Clinic, medical students gain hands-on experience of general GP care and integrative medicine in practice. They experience first-hand the concepts of mind-body medicine and health promotion, as well as multi-professional collaboration within the outpatient team, and can apply these directly in their future careers.
