Chair of Internal Medicine II
The Chair of Internal Medicine II at Witten/Herdecke University is based at the ‘Kliniken der Stadt Köln’, Cologne Merheim Medical Centre, Department of Internal Medicine I. The Director of the department, Professor Achim Jörres, MD, heads the Chair.
The Medical Clinic I is a supra-regional centre for internal medicine specialising in
- kidney and hypertension-related diseases (nephrology)
- transplant medicine and clinical immunology
- internal medicine intensive care and emergency medicine.
The Medical Clinic I is fully authorised to provide specialist training in internal medicine, nephrology and internal intensive care medicine. Around 80 beds are available across four wards for patient care, including the Internal Medicine Intensive Care Unit (Medical Clinics I and II) and the central dialysis unit. The interdisciplinary A&E department treats around 35,000 patients per year, and there are two helipads. In addition, there are outpatient clinics for kidney and hypertension disorders as well as transplant medicine.

Teaching
The Chair of Internal Medicine II is integrated into the clinical block training programme as part of the model medical degree programme and runs the ‘Internal Medicine’ clinical block. A minimum of four and a maximum of six students are supervised per practical block. A good knowledge of physiology, biochemistry and anatomy, as well as a basic understanding of clinical pharmacology, virology and microbiology, is desirable for undertaking the practical block.
The department also offers training places for around six to eight students in their practical year (PJ).
