Chair of Pharmacology and Toxicology

Basic research into genetic variability and the drug therapies based on it

The Chair of Pharmacology and Toxicology at Witten/Herdecke University is part of the Centre for Biomedical Education and Research (ZBAF) within the Faculty of Health and focuses on the variability of genes and their associated proteins, which are the targets of so-called ‘targeted therapy’. In particular, research is being carried out into the four protein prenyltransferases and their inhibitors. Prenyltransferases are key enzymes involved in the development of very common diseases, such as various types of cancer and hepatitis D, as well as very rare conditions, such as progeria. In addition, the antibacterial potential of prenyltransferase inhibitors is being investigated to provide avenues for the development of new antibiotics. Alongside basic research into these genes, proteins and inhibitors, particular attention is paid to translational aspects of personalised drug therapy.
