Prompt and expert psychotherapeutic support at the Centre for Mental Health and Psychotherapy
Basic training in therapeutic practice
Outpatient therapeutic treatment services for mental health conditions
The Psychotherapy Training Service is a treatment programme offered by the School of Psychology and Psychotherapy within the Faculty of Health at Witten/Herdecke University. People experiencing a mental health crisis can receive outpatient psychotherapeutic support here.
As a university institution, we aim to make our students’ training and psychotherapy research as practice-oriented as possible. That is why students on the Psychology (M.Sc.) programme at Witten/Herdecke University are actively involved in the treatment of our patients within the teaching therapy centre. Under the supervision of qualified psychotherapists, the students apply scientifically sound psychological methods and diagnostic tools in the treatment process. This highly structured approach leads to rapid successes in the process of change.
The range of treatments offered by the teaching outpatient clinic is subject to constant scientific scrutiny and is continuously improved. Just as psychotherapy is developed through research, the experience gained from our psychotherapy sessions feeds into new research projects.
Our work is based on the latest scientific findings regarding mental disorders and their treatment. In doing so, we take into account not only the problems, but also the abilities and potential of the patients and those around them.
What’s on offer and how it works
Unfortunately, due to high demand, we are no longer able to offer intake interviews. The telephone consultation service will remain closed until August 2026. Please get in touch with us again then.
Psychotherapy services within primary care provided by trainee therapists
Our services are aimed at adults with mental health conditions. Treatment is provided by a team comprising an experienced psychotherapist and a student.
The benefits of treatment within the basic training-based therapeutic care programme:
- rapid support for mental distress
- free therapy
- scientifically sound psychological methods
- a highly structured and supervised therapeutic process
- Intensive treatment over twelve sessions
- ‘Dual supervision principle’: Master’s students are involved in the therapeutic process
- Bridging waiting times
- Comprehensive preparation and follow-up for each therapy session by the therapists
This service is not suitable for people whose difficulties are partly caused by the use of alcohol, cannabis or other addictive substances.
Initial contact
For an initial enquiry, we are available during our telephone consultation hours. We take down the details of those interested and, if necessary, arrange an appointment for an initial consultation, during which we discuss with them whether our services are suitable for them.
Next steps
Treatment begins with an initial consultation, followed by an assessment phase during which we examine our patients’ issues and strengths in more detail. This is followed by the therapy phase, in which scientifically proven psychological methods are employed.
Treatment is tailored individually to the participants’ goals. Should a training-based therapeutic intervention be advisable, we invite participants to a total of twelve one-to-one therapy sessions.
During these sessions, Master’s students specialising in psychology with a focus on clinical psychology and psychotherapy take on various aspects of the therapy under the supervision and evaluation of state-registered psychotherapists. Finally, there is a relapse prevention phase, which deepens and consolidates what has been learnt. Progress in therapy and the achievement of the agreed goals are monitored on an ongoing basis. We record the twelve therapy sessions to ensure a high standard of treatment through preparation and follow-up.
Treatment periods
Treatments take place throughout the year, so you can contact us at any time to arrange an initial consultation. Treatment usually takes the form of a weekly 50-minute session. A prerequisite for taking part in the programme is that patients are able to attend a maximum of twelve therapy sessions regularly over a period of approximately 15 weeks as part of the basic therapeutic training programme.
Costs
The teaching therapy is free of charge for participants. The costs are covered as part of the student training programme.
