This claim is at the centre of everything we do: it means that we not only provide young people with professional training, but also enable them to implement their own ideas and act with commitment and effectiveness - at the university and beyond. It means that we offer staff and lecturers a place where they can develop. And it means that we integrate important social issues into degree programmes and research specialisations, promoting and encouraging critical discussion.

For 40 years, Witten/Herdecke University has been offering young talents degree programmes with a future in the fields of economics, politics, society and medicine. Degree programmes in dentistry, psychology and nursing science have been added and are still being expanded today. Our students benefit from individualised support at eye level. As a model university, we are also a pioneer in the development and application of unusual learning and examination settings. Our research is free and transdisciplinary. Institutes, initiatives, projects, outpatient clinics as well as staff and students develop innovative, sustainable and practice-orientated solutions that contribute to positive change in society.
Our principles of action
Our corporate philosophy motivates us to bring about a just and sustainable change in the world and to show consideration for the planetary boundaries of our planet. We want to help ensure that the vision of real change also bears fruit at Witten/Herdecke University. A climate-neutral, open-minded and modern working and learning atmosphere in an inspiring community should be the breeding ground for our students, lecturers and staff.
University as enabler
As one of the largest employers in Witten, Witten/Herdecke University brings together almost 3,000 people under its roof. We see ourselves as a driving force and enabler of transformation in various areas of our society, such as sustainability and diversity. In an increasingly digital (educational) world, we also attach particular importance to personal encounters.

The three core values of Witten/Herdecke University - encouraging freedom, striving for truth and assuming social responsibility - provide orientation and (re)reflection.
They are reflected
- in the selection of students,
- in the curriculum of the individual degree programmes,
- in the financing of the university, almost 90 per cent of which is based on its own earning power,
- in the focus on sustainability in teaching, research and campus life,
- in the prioritisation of research projects,
- in the independent initiatives of university members beyond teaching and research (e.g. student initiatives and enterprises),
- in the constitution of the academic bodies and
- in the self-commitment "Teaching and Learning at Witten/Herdecke University".
