Therapeutic approaches at the molecular and cellular levels
At the Chair of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine, researchers are investigating modern molecular therapeutic approaches – ranging from siRNAs to oncolytic viral vectors designed to destroy cancer cells. The Chair is divided into four research areas: Molecular Medicine and Gene Transfer Vectors, Nuclear Architecture, Functional Genomics and Lipid Biochemistry of Ageing, and forms part of the Centre for Biomedical Education and Research (ZBAF) within the Faculty of Health.

Research
- Molecular Medicine: The research specialisation of Molecular Medicine centres on the development of various viral and non-viral gene transfer vectors. Particular interest is focused on so-called oncolysis, in which cancer cells are destroyed by viruses: the researchers are improving the efficacy and deliverability of oncolytic viruses by modifying chemical surfaces and developing new genetic elements.
Responsible: Prof. Dr Florian Kreppel
- Functional Genomics: The Functional Genomics division focuses on various biomarkers for the diagnosis and treatment of different diseases. Biomarkers provide information about diseases, biological processes or responses to treatments. The researchers at the Chair of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine focus in particular on microRNA molecules from saliva samples as biomarkers.
In charge: PD Dr Andreas Savelsbergh

Publications
All publications by the Chair of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine at UW/H are gradually being included in the university bibliography.
Teaching
For students on the model degree programme in medicine and the dentistry degree programme, the Chair of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine offers seminars, practical sessions and journal clubs; the focus is on Problem-Based Learning (PBL) as a tried-and-tested teaching method. The subjects taught include General Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry and Scientific Methods – MediLab. The Chair is also involved in teaching on the PhD programme in Biomedicine at the Faculty of Health.
