Working together for excellence in dentistry
Fördergemeinschaft Zahnmedizin e. V. (Association for the Promotion of Dentistry)
Strengthening teaching and research
Promoting the university education of future dentists and driving forward innovative research – that is the guiding principle of the Fördergemeinschaft Zahnmedizin e. V.
The Fördergemeinschaft was founded in 1985 by dentists from across Germany, shortly after the School of Dentistry at Witten/Herdecke University began its work. Since then, this charitable association has supported the development of this specialist discipline.
Through the Fördergemeinschaft Zahnmedizin e. V., the School of Dentistry has become a bridge between academia and clinical practice: recommendations from supporting members with clinical experience are incorporated into the development of the curriculum and research profiles.
With its holistic teaching approach and forward-looking research, the department of Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine at Witten/Herdecke University enjoys a first-class reputation.

Tasks and support measures
The Fördergemeinschaft Zahnmedizin e. V. supports the School of Dentistry at Witten/Herdecke University through targeted project funding and grants. In order to advance the scientific work carried out by the chairs within the School of Dentistry, the association has also, on numerous occasions in the past, provided funding for modern, high-quality equipment.
A selection of current and completed projects and funding schemes

- student initiatives
- Doctoral projects
- Travel grants for PhD students attending conferences
- A profilometer for the Chair of Operative and Preventive Dentistry: This measuring instrument makes it possible to analyse the surface properties of dental materials, prostheses or natural teeth.

Rules governing the award of the PhD Prize:
- The Fördergemeinschaft issues a certificate for the doctoral thesis prize, which is signed by two members of the Executive Board.
- The prize money amounts to €500. The prize cannot be shared amongst multiple theses.
- Only doctoral studies leading to a Dr. med. dent. degree with an overall grade of ‘summa cum laude’ or ‘magna cum laude’ are eligible for shortlisting for the Doctoral Prize. The results of the thesis must have been published by the doctoral candidate as first author, co-first author or last author.
- Each year, the selection process includes doctoral studies completed in the autumn of the previous year and in the spring of the year in which the prize is awarded.
- If no doctoral studies are completed during the relevant period with the above-mentioned grades, the Doctoral Award will not be presented.
- The Executive Board of the Support Association appoints a jury to decide on the award of the doctoral prize.
