The Chair of Gynaecology and Obstetrics is based at Marien Hospital Witten. The Chair is held by Professor Dr med. Sven Schiermeier, who represents the discipline in research and teaching.

Foetal assessment
Foetal cardiology:
- Foetal electrocardiography

Foeto-maternal communication:
- Quantification of uterine contractions
Fibroids
- Clinical evaluation of modern minimally invasive techniques for the treatment of uterine fibroids
- Clinical evaluation of ultrasound therapy for uterine myoma (in collaboration with the Department of Radiology, Bochum)
Pelvic floor surgery
Clinical evaluation of laparoscopic procedures for the treatment of pelvic floor defects (in collaboration with Dormagen District Hospital).
Breast cancer
Participation in numerous studies on adjuvant therapy for breast cancer
Endometriosis
At the department, we are conducting our own studies into the optimal minimally invasive surgical treatment for women with endometriosis. Our research also focuses on optimising pain management for women with endometriosis.
Gynaecological Oncology (DKG Gynaecological Cancer Centre)
The German Cancer Society has certified the Gynaecological Cancer Centre at the Women’s Clinic of Marien Hospital Witten. The centre conducts its own research, primarily focused on optimising and introducing minimally invasive surgery in gynaecological oncology.
Another branch of the centre’s own research focuses on evaluating screening options for gynaecological malignancies.
We also regularly participate in multicentre studies organised by the Working Group for Gynaecological Oncology.

Teaching
We teach the content relating to gynaecology and obstetrics in the model medical degree programme through ‘problem-based learning’ (PBL) at the start of the course, in the form of seminars during the subsequent ‘theory block’ and through clinical and practical block training.
The four-week ‘Gynaecology’ clinical block is compulsory for all students. Here, they are taught gynaecological examination techniques, obstetrics, as well as surgical gynaecology and breast surgery.
During the clinical block, there is a two-hour seminar every day. This includes, amongst other things, students presenting patient cases.
