Radiological Diagnostics in Research and Teaching

The Chair of Clinical Radiology at Witten/Herdecke University is based at the Centre for Radiology at Helios University Hospital Wuppertal (HUKW).

Through a structured training programme and clinically relevant teaching content, the staff help students gain a solid grounding in modern radiological diagnostics. Particular emphasis is placed on interdisciplinary knowledge and practical application. The curriculum covers topics in radiology, paediatric and neuroradiology, as well as the fundamentals of nuclear medicine and radiotherapy. Research

The Chair of Clinical Radiology offers a wide range of diagnostic tests and treatments, carried out using state-of-the-art radiological equipment designed to minimise radiation exposure. Clinically and scientifically, the staff focus on common widespread diseases as well as rare conditions and diseases with unusual clinical courses that require specialised diagnosis and treatment. Research is practice-oriented and closely linked to other specialist departments.

A key area of research is cardiovascular imaging. In collaboration with the Chair of Cardiology, research is being conducted into, amongst other things, imaging for heart attacks and rare heart conditions, including the effects of post-COVID syndrome.

Another key research specialisation, in collaboration with the Chair of Urology, is retroperitoneal fibrosis – a rare condition. The research involves investigating various imaging techniques for monitoring and treatment.

Teaching

Model Degree Programme in Medicine

The Chair of Clinical Radiology is responsible for radiology training and teaching during the preclinical and clinical phases of the model degree programme in Medicine (StEx) at Witten/Herdecke University. As radiology is an interdisciplinary subject, teaching takes place in almost every semester. The pre-clinical radiography lecture series (semesters 1–4) covers the fundamentals of radiological technology and radiographic anatomy, tailored to the key topics of each semester’s curriculum. In the clinical phase, radiology forms an integral part of the clinical weeks dedicated to problem-based learning (POL) in every semester.

In addition, the department regularly supervises students as part of a clinical clerkship and during the elective term of their clinical year.


Continuing and Further Education

The Centre for Radiology in Wuppertal offers the full specialist training programme in radiology (60 months), including subspecialisations in neuroradiology and paediatric radiology (36 months each).
