Chair of Prosthetic Dentistry and Dental Technology

Our experts in dental prosthetics

The Chair of Prosthetic Dentistry and Dental Technology focuses on the replacement of single or multiple teeth and the restoration of masticatory function, aesthetics and phonetics.

The dentists are equally active in research, teaching and patient care. Their shared aim is to further develop and evaluate dental treatments. Sustainable treatment plans, new technologies and interdisciplinary collaboration with other (dental) medical departments benefit both patients and students.

Research

This research specialisation covers a wide-ranging field within prosthetic dentistry.

Materials science research / basic research:

  • Ceramic restorative materials
  • Wear analysis of indirectly or directly fabricated restorations
  • CAD/CAM systems
  • Retention materials
  • Marginal quality as a function of finishing methods
  • Navigation-guided implantology (3D planning)
  • Implant prosthetic concepts (hybrid abutment crown)
  • Cell adhesion and proliferation on dental materials

Clinical research areas:

  • Identification and early detection of defects in hard dental tissue
  • Patterns of influence associated with craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD)
  • Evaluation of the success of dental prostheses (doctor-patient relationship)
  • Management and treatment of patients with chronic pain
  • The role of medical hypnosis as a therapeutic tool
  • Lifetime analysis of treatment plans (including non-prep restorations and post-retained dentures)

Teaching

The unique curriculum of the dental training programme at Witten/Herdecke University is characterised in particular by continuity and the integration of various medical specialities. Prosthodontics is at the heart of both the pre-clinical and clinical stages of the programme.

The programme equips students with the ability to solve complex dental problems by the time they sit their state examination. In doing so, they learn to take key medical considerations and patients’ individual needs into account. To achieve this aim, the core areas of the programme are organised into a progressive learning process. At Witten/Herdecke University, courses have been combined for this purpose that are often taught separately at state universities.

Preclinical training takes place continuously in weekly courses over the first six semesters. The aim of this phase is to equip students with the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge and skills for their future clinical education. During the weekly practical sessions, they learn the fundamentals of dental and dental technology work, including the materials used and the scientific background. They are able to apply and consolidate their newly acquired knowledge directly. Students begin with simple prosthetic restorations such as crowns and bridges. The complexity of their treatments increases steadily throughout the pre-clinical phase of their studies.

The clinical phase, running from the seventh to the tenth semester, is characterised by the Integrated Clinical Course. Personal mentors guide and support students as they treat their patients independently.

The focus during the clinical phase is on sophisticated methods of interdisciplinary diagnosis and treatment of prosthetic issues. Students are also introduced to how to apply the latest research findings in this context.

Information for patients

The Chair of Prosthetic Dentistry and Dental Technology offers a wide range of treatments. The main focus is on fixed and removable dentures. Depending on the findings and individual needs, these can be anchored to the patient’s own teeth or to implants. In addition, specialists are available for the diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ).
