The Chair of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy builds on the pioneering tradition established by the department’s first chair, Prof. Klaus Dörner (†), and his successor, Prof. Karl H. Beine. Both were pioneers in their field and provided significant impetus for a social and humanistic approach to psychiatry. We are continuing this tradition by combining their values and approaches with modern scientific and practical developments. Our aim is to promote innovative, patient-centred teaching and treatment concepts that meet the complex demands of mental health care, both now and in the future.

Research

The Chair’s research priorities lie in the fields of social psychiatry and health care research, with a particular focus on transcultural psychiatry and the provision of psychiatric and psychotherapeutic care for migrants. A central component of current research is the pilot project ‘Integrative Psychiatry Hamm’ (IPH), which aims to improve the quality of care through continuous support for patients even as they move between different treatment settings. The prevention or reduction of coercive measures during psychiatric treatment is also of particular interest in this context and is being scientifically investigated, amongst other things, as part of several doctoral theses.

Teaching

At the Chair of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, we offer an integrative and practice-oriented programme of study that combines the latest scientific findings with practical methods, whilst also incorporating philosophical, humanistic and sociological perspectives. This comprehensive approach enables our students to gain a deep understanding of the complex dimensions of mental illness and its treatment.

Our courses promote critical thinking and reflective clinical approaches, with a particular emphasis on taking into account patients’ individual life contexts and subjective experiences. Interactive teaching formats, clinical case studies and practical exercises specifically prepare students for the challenges of mental health care.

A key component of our teaching is continuous feedback from students. We actively use this to continually improve our teaching methods and content and to adapt them to the changing demands of the discipline. We also maintain close partnerships with clinical institutions to provide valuable practical insights and experience. For example, we offer additional placement opportunities within the Psychology degree programme, and within the Master’s in Psychotherapy, we provide the opportunity to undertake the Professional Qualifying Activities (BQT I and BQT III) on behalf of the University of Münster and Witten/Herdecke University. Furthermore, we are a partner clinic for further training institutes in psychological psychotherapy within the framework of the practical placements (PT1 and PT2).

Our training aims to foster an empathetic approach and interdisciplinary collaboration in order to meet the complex demands of psychiatric and psychotherapeutic practice.
