Chair of Orthopaedics

Orthopaedics at Dortmund University Hospital

Dortmund Hospital is the largest municipal hospital trust in North Rhine-Westphalia. The Chair of Orthopaedics carries out in-depth health care research across all musculoskeletal areas. Its main areas of focus are, in particular, joint replacement surgery, joint-preserving surgery and paediatric orthopaedics.

The Department of Orthopaedics covers the entire spectrum of modern orthopaedic care. A particular area of focus is joint replacement surgery, in which we are certified as a maximum-care joint replacement centre. In addition, we offer joint-preserving surgery, sports orthopaedics, paediatric and adolescent orthopaedics, as well as foot surgery and spinal surgery.

Our team consists of around 20 doctors. Each year, we perform around 1,000 joint replacement operations, 600 arthroscopies, 250 joint-preserving pelvic operations, just under 200 foot surgery procedures and around 1,200 operations in the field of paediatric orthopaedics.

Research

We offer a wide range of opportunities for doctoral studies and postdoctoral university lecturing qualifications, and see our research mission as centring primarily on healthcare provision. We have a broad spectrum of treatments with a high volume of cases, which is why health care research into PROMS, in particular, is one of our key areas of focus.

Teaching

Students on practical blocks and in their practical year gain an insight into all areas of the department. They shadow the team in the operating theatre, on the wards and during outpatient consultations. There, they can observe both the treatment of common conditions and specialised procedures.

Close supervision by experienced mentors ensures a structured and practical training programme. In addition, we offer committed students the opportunity to complete their doctoral studies with us. During the practical block, you will attend a seminar every day, where we discuss a topic in depth.
