Chair of Health Care Research

Teaching and research aimed at ensuring healthcare that meets people’s needs and requirements

Health care research makes a significant contribution to ensuring that health policy is evidence-based and is therefore crucial to guaranteeing that healthcare provision meets the needs and requirements of the population. The Chair addresses this field of research from a health services and social epidemiological perspective by using mixed-methods approaches to investigate how population groups differ in terms of their health and health behaviour, as well as with regard to their use of and outcomes from healthcare services. In doing so, the Chair helps to uncover the mechanisms underlying the emergence of inequalities in health, as well as in access to and the quality of healthcare. The aim is to derive strategies from this research that can be used to optimise the health and healthcare of the population.

The Chair is closely integrated into the Interdisciplinary Centre for Health Services Research (IZVF). In particular, it collaborates with the clinical chairs, the School of Nursing Science and the Faculty of Economics. At a methodological level, the Chair focuses on the further development of epidemiological and social science methods in health care research.

In terms of research content, the Chair’s research interests focus in particular on the following areas:

  • health and healthcare for people with a migrant background,
  • dealing with diversity in the healthcare system,
  • chronic diseases, perceptions of illness and coping with illness,
  • patient-reported outcomes,
  • rehabilitation and care, and
  • International public health.

Research

Germany’s population is characterised by diversity, for example in terms of factors such as gender, age, socio-economic status, disability or migration background. These characteristics are associated with differing expectations of healthcare provision. 

If these expectations are not taken into account, this can lead to barriers and dissatisfaction with care and have a detrimental effect on the accessibility and quality of care. 

The Chair of Health Care Research is dedicated to this field of research, using mixed-methods approaches to investigate how population groups differ in terms of their health, their use of healthcare services and healthcare outcomes. Measures are developed to support healthcare providers and organisations across different sectors of the healthcare system in implementing care that is sensitive to diversity.

Teaching

In terms of teaching, the Chair is integrated into both the pre-clinical and clinical stages of UW/H’s model degree programme in Medicine. The focus is primarily on the interdisciplinary area of ‘health care economics, the health system and public health’ as set out in the regulations governing the medical licensing examination. The Chair also runs courses on the topics of diversity and research methods within the degree programmes of the School of Nursing Science.
