Research

Cancer research

Treatment of malignant diseases

The paediatric oncology and haematology departments at the Vestische Kinder- und Jugendklinik Datteln, Herdecke Community Hospital and Klinikum Dortmund are participating in collaborative studies organised by the German Society for Paediatric Oncology and Haematology (GPOH) and international research groups, and are conducting research into optimal treatments for malignant diseases in children and adolescents. Professor Schneider at Klinikum Dortmund heads the Paediatric Rare Tumour Diseases Register (STEP), which is used to investigate ways of improving care for affected children and young people.

Understanding human nutrition

The Department of Endocrinology and Diabetology is working to gain scientific insights into human nutrition in order to prevent or effectively treat conditions such as obesity.

With this in mind, a training programme (Obeldicks) has been developed which addresses the various issues faced by overweight children and young people. The aims of the Obeldicks programme are

  • weight loss,
  • the prevention of secondary conditions, such as diabetes mellitus, lipid metabolism disorders and atherosclerosis, and, above all,
  • to improve the quality of life of overweight children and adolescents.

Learning from individual experiences and drawing conclusions

The Chair’s research in the field of child protection aims to learn from the many individual cases and to develop measures that can improve care for all. The key questions are:

  • What risk factors need to be taken into account when it comes to child welfare risks?
  • Which support measures are effective within families?
  • Which preventive measures can provide reliable protection?
