Modern, patient-centred cardiac surgery
The Chair of Cardiac Surgery, headed by Prof. Dr Mahmoud Diab, is dedicated to modern, patient-centred cardiac surgery in research, teaching and clinical practice. The aim is to combine innovative surgical techniques, personalised treatment approaches and translational research in order to bring about a lasting improvement in the care of patients with heart disease.
The Chair of Cardiac Surgery at Witten/Herdecke University is integrated into the Heart Centre at Helios University Hospital Wuppertal.

Research
The Chair’s main research specialisations lie in translational cardiac surgery, with a particular focus on:
- Infective endocarditis and its surgical treatment
- Minimally invasive and catheter-assisted valve surgery
- Myocardial protection and post-operative cardiac function
- Biological valve prostheses and tissue integration
- Prevention and treatment of infectious complications in cardiac surgery
Ongoing research projects focus on improving surgical outcomes in complex cases of endocarditis, optimising perioperative strategies, and integrating innovative materials and technologies into cardiac surgery.

Teaching
The Chair of Cardiac Surgery is part of the model degree programme in medicine at Witten/Herdecke University during the clinical phase of the programme. Furthermore, the Chair also offers clinical clerkships for final-year medical students.
