At the WittenLab. Zukunftslabor Studium fundamentale, researchers from a range of disciplines – including philosophy, communication studies, history, art history, musicology, sociology and psychology – come together. They all aim to transcend the boundaries of their own disciplines in their research, to work in an interdisciplinary manner and to address overarching research questions.

The WittenLab. Zukunftslabor Studium fundamentale therefore embodies an expanded concept of research: the researchers bring together science and art, archives and philosophy, reading and case studies, past knowledge and future scenarios, as well as expert knowledge and everyday knowledge. As a hub for innovative scholarship, the WittenLab. creates scope for forward-looking forms of knowledge production.

The WittenLab. Zukunftslabor Studium fundamentale offers a space within Witten/Herdecke University (UW/H) where inter- and transdisciplinary researchers can collaborate across faculties. Furthermore, it is open to collaboration with individuals and partner institutions from the wider university community.

The research projects and real-world laboratories are open to associates from various disciplines as well as to students, and thus provide a platform for well-founded, exploratory, transformative and artistic teaching within the Studium fundamentale programme.

The Research Funding Department at Witten/Herdecke University supports and advises our researchers throughout the entire process, from submitting an application and finalising the contract through to project implementation and the completion phase. In addition, the staff at the Research Funding Department provide information on national and international calls for proposals and individual funding opportunities.
