Does a near-death experience change the experience of meaning?

Qualitative research from the perspective of affected people

Project overview

Background to the study
In recent decades, international research, particularly quantitative research, has focussed on the effects of near-death experiences (NDEs) on the subsequent lives of those affected and their personal and professional values. However, neither in Germany nor internationally are there any studies focussing on whether and how exactly the experience of meaning changes after an NDE.

Aim of the study
Against this background, the aim of this study was to survey near-death experiencers using qualitative interviews in order to gain a deeper understanding of this complex topic. The data from N=8 respondents was analysed deductively using qualitative content analysis.

Results of the study
The results show that NDEs sometimes triggered a search for meaning for the first time, which led to a decrease in material values and an increase in idealistic values. The latter influenced almost all other areas of meaning and life of the study participants, such as their sources of meaning in everyday life, life task/determination, self-care, social encounters and also the meaning of life. The study participants also gave recommendations for people who have questions about meaning. This qualitative study provides a rich insight into the change in the experience of meaning after NDEs and thus offers a sound basis for future research. (Psycho)therapists, patients and people "interested in meaning" can also find valuable suggestions and support.
