Prof Dr Andreas Wiedemann has been awarded the title of "Greenlight Expert User" - expert in greenlight laser treatment of the prostate. This laser treatment for benign enlargement of the prostate is considered to be particularly gentle. The Head Physician of the Urology Clinic at the Protestant Hospital in Witten and Professor of Urogeriatrics at Witten/Herdecke University is one of around a dozen surgeons worldwide to have received this award. In Germany, Prof Wiedemann is one of only three urologists in Germany to receive the coveted award, alongside a urologist at the Charité in Berlin and a colleague from Hamburg.

In addition to his experience of more than 1,000 greenlight operations, Wiedemann has also researched the particularly gentle laser operation for benign prostate enlargement. Compared to conventional resection of the prostate with electric snares, laser surgery showed a shorter hospitalisation time, improved patient comfort and less stress on nursing staff (Lichtenberg T, Wiedemann A, Heppner HJ, Aktuelle Urol. 2020 Feb;51(1):59-64. doi: 10.1055/a-1069-7103. Epub 2020 Feb 4). The Witten working group under Prof. Wiedemann was also able to prove that PSA values ("prostate-specific antigen", actually a tumour marker) fall significantly after laser surgery on the prostate - thanks to the effective tissue reduction caused by the procedure (Wiedemann A, Heese M, Heppner HJ, Aktuelle Urol. 2020 Feb;51(1):53-58. doi: 10.1055/a-1021-6776. Epub 2020 Feb 4).
