Art and Its Significance for Future Academic Education

If AI makes knowledge available at any time, what is left for higher education to offer? In her keynote, Margaret S. Chisolm argues that the arts and humanities hold part of the answer. She focuses on capacities that remain distinctly human: close looking, tolerating ambiguity, taking other perspectives, and a sense of wonder. Drawing on her long-standing work at Johns Hopkins, she shows how encounters with art help students reflect on who they are and who they want to become as professionals. Her guiding idea is human flourishing: education that helps learners grow as whole persons, not only as experts.
