KULTURZEIT-Media perception vs. direct witnessing: Students report from Calais

We hear a lot in the media - tougher migration policy, lowering the "numbers". But what is the actual situation at Europe's external borders?

The situation in Calais, France, has changed considerably since the official evacuation of the large refugee centre, also known as the "Jungle of Calais", in October 2016. However, it is still characterised by a precarious humanitarian situation. There is no longer a large centralised camp. Instead, the authorities are pursuing a "zero tolerance policy" to prevent the formation of new permanent camps.

The Stufu seminar "Becoming a Global Witness in Calais" by Prof Dr Kazuma Matoba has been offered place for five years, in which many students have volunteered and conducted research for the refugees. A group of these students are now reporting on the situation of the refugee crisis in Europe and their experiences as "witnesses".
