Participatory development of a manual on diversity-sensitive palliative and hospice care using the example of a migrant background

Project overview

People with characteristics of diversity that differ from those of the majority population face a wide range of challenges when accessing hospice and palliative care services. These include, for example, language barriers, a failure to take cultural or spiritual needs into account, a lack of gender-sensitive communication, or even rejection and discrimination.

Approaches designed to address these challenges are often limited and focus predominantly on individual characteristics of diversity or specific problems; as a result, they are insufficient as a basis for adequate, user-centred care.

In the ParDiMi project, therefore, a guide was developed in collaboration with staff from hospice and palliative care services, as well as patients and their relatives, to support hospice and palliative care organisations in implementing diversity-sensitive care. The aim of the project was to produce practical guidance that maps out the entire process of introducing diversity-sensitive care and describes appropriate measures.

The guidance note

This guide is intended to help organisations plan and implement their own care plans. It describes the entire process, from needs assessment through to planning objectives and measures, implementing these measures, and finally evaluation and adjustment. To this end, the guide contains case studies and practical tips designed to facilitate implementation, as well as a catalogue of suitable measures. The appendix also includes templates and forms that can be used for implementation. You can download the final version of the guide from the zenodo.org platform or directly here.
